The Big Show / Talk to me about I-80
« on: January 07, 2017, 07:03:18 PM »
Have a real nice steer out of I-80, every time he hits a growth spurt he gets a little straight up front. Then he fills back out and looks fine. Currently 7-750 lbs. Should I be concerned about how he grows out? Anyone watched a few of these grow out?

FYI dams a super sound IW granddaughter home raised have dam and granddam, very sound Angus.

The Big Show / I officially call BS
« on: December 03, 2015, 11:13:19 PM »
I initially thought online sales were great, and from an ability to view multitudes of cattle they still are a great resource. But....Online sales have propped up the show cattle industry with inflated prices and false reporting to the point where the reality of the market has been lost. No better than a subsidized market, yet the subsidies are false. How many "sold" cattle have been offered for lease and sale for pennies on the dollar after being "sold" online for substantial money. It's a saturated market, for an industry where success is defined by your ability to hide faults with hair. Every dispersal is followed by 1,000 people trying to sell the progeny from cows they bought that the same cattle big name producers would have been marketing and finding out they can't get a bid. I digress, I momentarily forgot that perception is reality and truth an unwelcome perspective. Ok, back to reality. I mean, well, a version of it...or whatever the inter web tells me is true.

The Big Show / My Turn Reg. ?
« on: March 14, 2011, 12:39:58 PM »
If he is a reg Chi, and documented to be 32% Maine, will the Maine Anjou Assoc count that in his progeny?

Example: I breed him to a Registered 50% Maine cow; the offspring is technically 41% Maine. Does the Maine Association only count the 25% from the registered dam? Thus making the offspring only registerable as 25% Maine?

The Big Show / Highliner Calf--Updated pic

I have 3 more Highliner*Stockman 365 embryos coming this year. I know last year I never had time to get any pics and post them so this year I'm trying to do a little better. Last year I had 4 of this mating and was very pleased. Highliner Heifer pictured.

The Big Show / Paradigm Implosion
« on: February 23, 2011, 05:07:42 PM »
I have contended on here many times TH and PHA are breeding tools to be used wisely, and to each their own. That hasn't changed. I always pick the carrier bulls out in a crowd. I have a clean herd and always use carriers. But...

Today I went to the studs...came back excited about a couple of bulls, a new one and an older one.

Both are TH/PHA free. I'm in disbelief.

I'm on the floor in the fetal position, shaking and drooling uncontrollably as I type.  I may not be able to post again until I resolve this unexpected and unexplainable occurrence.

Something is wrong, something is very very wrong...

The Big Show / The loss of the curve bending clubby bull
« on: January 15, 2011, 12:46:03 PM »
I went back and looked at the bull contest on here, and some of the older bulls considered "great" and "breed changers". I've seen some of those bulls over the years on the hoof. Some of them had some problems, but most hadn't seen them in person or on the internet so they used them anyway.

I know newer bulls get crucified for many of the same problems some older bulls have and yet the older bulls get a pass. Some of those older bulls would not have stood up to the scrutiny of Display Row 2011, but they WORKED.

Are we gravitating to the center? Seems to be an abundance of good bulls. Better than average in most areas, but not exceptional anywhere.

I like "complete" bulls, they're fun to look at, but even a perfect bull is going to disappoint you every time unless you have a perfect cow(and even then). To a degree you've got no where to go but backwards. These bulls are useful don't get me wrong, but what about that bottom third of the herd you're trying change?

Does the increased scrutiny (pictures, cell phone pictures, video, etc) keep the "freaks" off of display row?

I don't care if they're perfect, if they are changers, I'll find a way to use them. But please, give me some freaks to look at too.

The Big Show / Anybody seen any of the bulls going to Denver?
« on: January 12, 2011, 05:45:08 PM »
All I've seen are the bulls on Matt's blog. What else have you heard about?
