The Big Show / Great illustration to debunk "pink slime" fiasco
« on: April 04, 2012, 06:54:13 PM »
A friend posted this on facebook and I think so far it best illustrates the harmlessness of the lean, finely-textured beef. I encourage you to post it to your facebook profile too!

The Big Show / Happy feral hog massacre day!

As of when I got off the chopper 60 hogs and 8 coyotes were dead. There's still more acreage to cover this afternoon.

The Big Show / Any thoughts on JF Milestone?
« on: January 12, 2012, 07:30:15 PM »
He sure did have some super heifers sell this past fall. I'm toying with the thought of flushing him to one of my cows however I'm disappointed that his milk EPD is so low and I've already been using Upgrade.

Has anyone seen calves or used him?

The Big Show / 5 day co-synch CIDR Time AI - I did it!
« on: December 30, 2011, 11:00:10 AM »
This is mainly directed at CAB because in past topics this protocol has been discussed and I went ahead and used it on my cows this year.

Last year I used the 7 day protocol and had a 53% conception rate to the time AI, good but not great.

So far we're right at the peak of repeats from the 5 day time AI and results are looking so good it's freaking me out. Right now it's looking like we're going to improve 10-15% on the time AI from last year! Of my mature cows I've only rebred 3 of 47.

I hope I'm not jinxing myself posting this, but I'll follow up with a post when we're done watching repeats.

The Big Show / Which one doesn't belong? (funny)

Which one doesn't belong?

This axis doe wandered over from a neighbor's place and has been hanging out with our first calf heifers since September. We have all the cows up in the lot for AI and now she's hanging out in the pens with them.

The Big Show / Has anyone used IVF?

I'm considering using it on a couple donors. Does anyone have experience with using IVF and what were your thoughts?

Rednecks hunting down feral hogs...what's not to like?

I'm not usually a fan of reality TV, but I might have to make an exception!

The Big Show / What is the longest you've had a cow go over due?
« on: October 10, 2011, 05:23:14 PM »
Just out of curiosity, what is the longest you've had a cow go over her due date?

I had two that calved right in between AI date and bull turn out. In the end I'll probably have to DNA the calves.

The longest I know for sure is 13 days over.

The Big Show / Alternate method of gathering cattle...great for laughs!

I might try this method on my next group of heifers!

The Big Show / Cows do the darnedest things...
« on: September 19, 2011, 01:50:55 PM »

I noticed this cow missing yesterday morning. She was due to calve so I figured she had a good hiding spot. This morning I still couldn't find her so I scoured the pasture looking for her and found her in the trench. So I called in the Calvary and got her out! I'm very thankful she didn't go into labor in the trench but still worried about the calf inside that is due any moment.

This is the fourth incident in our area related to an oil and gas pipeline being laid.

I raise SimAngus and Simbrah cattle in south Texas. Please check out our web site that has just been launched. Thanks for your time!

The Big Show / Simmental bull NLC Upgrade at Genex
« on: January 12, 2011, 11:56:02 AM »
Was looking through online listing of bulls at semen companies and saw that NLC Upgrade has been added to the Genex lineup. It took me by surprise. Anyone else know about this?

The Big Show / For those who enjoy Yellow Tail wines
« on: February 04, 2010, 10:21:00 AM »
You may want to reconsider buying the Yellow Tail brand next time you are buying wine. They donated $100,000 to HSUS.

Interesting that a company that suggests pairings of meat with their wines donates to an organization that wants everyone to be vegan. If you have a facebook account, you can go on their fan page and join many others (including me) who have posted on their wall about how upset we are that they would donate to HSUS.

The Big Show / Ideas on rehabilatating a crazy cow
« on: January 12, 2010, 09:47:13 PM »
I just got finished with a late night rodeo that included a busted faucet and a near death experience for me, but all things aside I finally penned a cow I've been trying to catch for 2 months.

Here's her background:

She doesn't come from psycho parents, her dam is very calm and so was her sire. She's a 5 year old that has always been a little silly, but nothing to raise alarm. Just kind of afraid of people. Anyway, when I was getting my cows up from the pasture to AI, she ran out of the catch pen before I could shut the gate and it has all been downhill since then. She runs away from my truck when I call her for cubes and when we penned her tonight, well, I explained above. She's a really really good cow and has great calves. Right now she's in our dry lot with a few other tame cows that we put out with her to help with catching her. I'm afraid to turn her back out in a pasture and am considering getting rid of her because I don't tolerate crazies. So I'm wondering if any of you cow whisperers have ideas about how to rehabilitate her.
