The Big Show / Angus Bull Calf, Critique Wanted
« on: August 23, 2016, 06:43:17 PM »
Anyone have conformation critique on this bull calf? Contemplating selling him at our beef expo. Purebred Angus, Registration number 18498115 if anyone wants to take a look at his EPD's. Sired by Tour of Duty out of a Dixie Erica cow. He is a late February calf.

The Big Show / Favorite bulls for club calf mamas?
« on: April 25, 2016, 10:10:59 AM »
I've read many past threads but I'm curious what people are using today as their base animals. I have purebred Angus, was planning to breed to another purebred (sim, maine, shorthorn, etc) to make halfbloods which would then be bred clubby. Anyone have recommendations? Have a few straws of Chill Factor in the tank but really want to use sexed semen. Would love to hear your recommendations, conventional and old options welcome too.

The Big Show / Would you keep/buy a twin as a herd bull?
« on: March 30, 2016, 09:18:45 AM »
I have a Dixie Erica X Tour of Duty bull calf who is looking pretty good. He was born twin to a heifer. Heifer didn't make it, found her too late. So trying to decide if he is worth raising as a bull and selling him at the local beef expo. Have a full sib heifer from last year who is pretty good. Very deep bodied, moderate framed heifer, with a fantastic temperament. Good EPD's as well. So assuming he meets visual and performance standards as he continues to grow is it worthwhile to keep him a bull or is it standard practice to cut twins? Thanks!

The Big Show / Looking for angus embryos...
« on: January 30, 2016, 05:16:06 PM »
Looking to buy a package of Angus embryos. Must be purebred Angus. Not interested in other breeds at this time. The goal for them is to make high quality show animals. Sexed heifer preferred but not required. Anyone have anything to sell? We are on a budget so will not be able to spend $1000+ per embryo. Feel free to message me or post what you have. Have a cow open right now that we are hoping to use as a recip so need them soon. Thanks in advance!!

The Big Show / Sire Reviews
« on: March 24, 2015, 11:00:12 AM »
Wanted to share this website with you guys. Cool idea!! People create an account and can "review" bulls, post offspring photos, etc to help people make more educated breeding decisions. No idea how old the website is but would love for some of the experienced breeders to share their knowledge on there. May eventually cut down on all the
"Breeding suggestions" posts. It is not my website, just popped up in a Google search I did yesterday. Anyway here it is!!

The Big Show / $EN in Angus Cattle EPD's
« on: February 12, 2015, 09:46:40 PM »
Trying to make some breeding decisions for this year. $EN is a trait I want to know more about. Most of the cattle we have are above average on that number. One is in top 10%. However I am wondering how this number is calculated. The majority of the cattle that have a good $EN seem to either be really small or have really low milk. So I'm assuming that factors in a lot. So should $EN be a heavy selection trait or are there more important things to worry about? Is that a reason it's not a major selection tool? Thanks in advance!!

The Big Show / Barn Cams.........
« on: February 07, 2015, 04:25:49 PM »
I've done a lot of research on them including look at old posts here. But I still have some questions.

Our only internet access is a Verizon MiFi. We pay by the gigabyte so less used is definitely better!! We are looking for a camera system that can be run to the house and connected through a TV/laptop by a cord (so no internet involved). But we would also like to be able to view from cell phones, which I know will take internet. That's fine if it only uses internet IF someone logs onto check it. Are there systems like that out there? Thanks in advance!!

Sound would be a bonus and we are looking to run a 2 camera system.

The Big Show / Retaining Cell Lines??
« on: November 05, 2014, 08:32:49 PM »
Just saw in a sale footnote that a producer is retaining two flushes and the rights to all cell lines and was curious what exactly it means? Does that mean I can't clone her or any of her offspring? What exactly does it prohibit? TIA!!

The Big Show / Revolution vs. Guts and Glory (Kalmbach Feed)
« on: October 16, 2014, 01:30:33 PM »
3 Feed questions:
We are presently feeding the 1/3 1/3 1/3 blend to a market heifer and steer, and a breeding heifer. I am concerned it does not have enough protein? They are going to be in a late august fair. Weighing 500-700 lbs now.

Anyone used either Revolution or Guts and Glory?
I was thinking of using Revolution for the last month before fair on the market animals. Will it effect phenotype negatively?

The guts and glory we were planning on using on feeders and replacement heifers a month or two before fair.

The Big Show / Beef Feeder to Steer Question??
« on: August 11, 2014, 06:26:22 PM »
Hello everyone! So my family is for the first time keeping one of our own calves to feed out as a steer. That being said we don't usually feed them out this way. I am looking for advise on how to properly get him to steer weight without over finishing him. He is going to be shown as a beef feeder for our county fair so he is on a pretty heavy feeding diet already (is penned with a heifer calf). Would a supplement like Maxum (https://www.sullivansupply.com/cart/ia/p-775-maxum.aspx) be helpful? After the fair in two weeks should we lighten his feed for a while? My personal guess for weight is 600 lbs. Fair is mid August. Being fed a starter-grower feed from Rural King which we have been adding cracked corn and beet pulp to. He is a PB Angus calf. Any other suggestions? Turn out? Hair care? Etc? Anything appreciated and thanks in advance.

The Big Show / PB Angus Bull/Steer calf... Opinions wanted.
« on: August 03, 2014, 08:59:07 PM »
This is a home grown 5 month old PB Angus Bull (soon to be steer) calf that we were looking for opinions on. He will be shown at the county fair as a beef feeder and either sold or kept to raise as a market steer. What do you guys think of him? Located in NW Ohio.

The Big Show / Concept Aid Question
« on: April 18, 2014, 02:09:20 PM »
How long should Concept Aid be fed to take an effect before breeding? We have had conception problems in the past so just ordered in a bag. Thanks!

The Big Show / Starting to look for a 2015 Steer!!
« on: March 24, 2014, 02:10:28 PM »
So I am coming up to my last three years of showing and it has been my goal to place Grand or Reserve at our county fair. I am starting to look for calves to make that happen. I will not have a ton to spend. Looking for a crossbred and a purebred. Usually at our county fair the top 3-4 steers are state fair hold backs (state fair is in July our fair is August) so my plan is to target my steers exactly for August because usually the comments are that the top couple steers are overdone or not as fresh as the judge would like. Nevertheless, they are also clearly the best steers there. I am located in NW Ohio and am willing to travel some for the right steer at the right price. Will definitely consider market heifer prospects as well. Max budget is going to be around $3500 total to buy two steers (so around $2000 each). Less is obviously better. Thanks! Message or post pictures please! Email is kkirsch5@hotmail.com if that is easier.

The Big Show / R B Tour Of Duty 177
« on: March 12, 2014, 10:17:06 AM »
Anyone seen offspring of this bull? Like his numbers a lot (with the exception of marbling and $EN) being a -1.1 BW to a +153 YW. Though he was pretty good phenotypically to. Anyone have any opinions good or bad on him? Thanks!! http://abs-bs.absglobal.com/beef/angus.asp?CodTouro=237AN2394
