The Big Show / Cow Having Hard Time with Hot Weather
« on: July 29, 2016, 08:45:53 PM »
We have a 3 year old cow that is really struggling with the 90 degree, high humidity, southern Indiana heat.  She stands in the coolest place she can find, usually in some water, and pants with her tongue out just trying to get all the air in she can.  She's not overly fat, small in size, and we body clipped her in May to help her.  But as it's got hotter she's still not taking it well.  The odd thing is, she has a late March steer on her that does the same thing.  He's a small calf, low birthweight, follows her body size, and is not overly haired up, but he's the only one of the calves that is bothered by the heat.  Is there a chance this is an inherited trait?  Thinking of culling her if it is.  Concerned one day she'll collapse from heat exhaustion and if her offspring are all like this, we're just promoting the problem.  The calf has 2 other sire mates and they are fine.

The Big Show / Cow Having Difficulty Urinating
« on: July 15, 2016, 09:21:42 PM »
Saw something this evening that has me wondering.  Noticed a cow humped up with her tail over her back trying to urinate.  She was dribbling a little and looked to be prolapsing with a baseball size, red protrusion.  I watched her like this a few minutes, then she took several steps, urinated a fair amount, but not a large amount.  After that she started grazing and was relaxed.  She never really strained a lot.
She calved around mid March and is still nursing.  She was A.I.ed in May and been with the clean-up bull since June 5.  She was standing 4 days ago and I suppose was serviced, but I didn't observe a breeding since it was almost dark.
Any ideas what the protrusion meant and why she could only dribble small amounts of urine?  Any chance it had something to do with the breeding 7/11?

The Big Show / Rye Straw
« on: June 05, 2016, 11:23:36 AM »
What is your opinion of Rye straw compared to Wheat for bedding?  is it as absorbent?  Just being used for calving, not tie stalls at shows.

The Big Show / TAI Protocols
« on: May 18, 2016, 05:41:27 PM »
I've been hit with an unfortunate situation and need advice.  My AI tech is injured and can not AI this spring.  We have a few more to go and wonder what is best.  My ABS rep can do it but would like them synced to make one trip (TAI).  Here's the deal on the cows:
2 - were set up for embryo implant 5/16.  They had cyst on ovary and were rejected.  GnRh was injected.
2 - are first calf heifers 40 days plus post-partum.  I tried something by Cidring to get them to jump-start cycling but did not breed.  Intending to Lute 11 days post-estrus from Cidr and then breed on heat detection.  They cycled off Cidr 5/10.

Scenario #1 - Lute all 4 around 5/25 and schedule TAI 5/28.  This will eliminate repeat Cidr protocol, but will they TAI off just Lute?  I may use Estrumate.

Scenario #2 - Cidr all 4 again around 5/21 with TAI 5/31?  Are there any negative affects in repeat Cidring 3 weeks after first Cidr protocol?  All 4 would be Cidr'ed 11 - 13 days after last heat.

My objectives here are first setting them up for the ABS Rep to make one trip.  Second, trying to stay in a March calving period.  I have a clean-up bull to catch the misses, so they're being AI'ed just once.  Really appreciate your feedback.  Be honest, but not too brutal!!LOL

The Big Show / Setting up with CIDR's
« on: April 30, 2016, 07:31:30 PM »
I have an idea for 2 late calving first calf heifers.  Can I CIDR but not breed after CIDR protocol and instead Lute 11 days after CIDR heat to get a better chance of a fertile heat?  I doubt they have cycled having calved only three weeks and a month ago.  First calf heifers are harder to settle for second calf, so I'd run less risk of wasting semen.  At least this is my thought.  Any other ideas?

The Big Show / Sires for Flushing
« on: March 22, 2016, 10:14:29 PM »
Have a very moderate 4X4 cow we might flush since she is getting older.  She's good necked, fairly deep-bodied, sound except a bit bold in the shoulder.  She's still youthful in her appearance and structure.  Looking mainly for females but half could be bulls, so don't want to throw them away as feeders.  Hannibal worked on her several years ago but both were bulls/steers.  How does Dr. Who, Hi Ho Silver, I-80 son (Driving 80?), any others???

The Big Show / Recent Calved Cow With Runs
« on: March 16, 2016, 09:00:11 PM »
Have a cow with squirting runs that calved two days ago.  She's on orchardgrass hay, no clover or alfalfa, no grain.  Any ideas why?  What could I give her?

The Big Show / Cows' Vulva Expanding
« on: March 10, 2016, 04:58:46 PM »
Just curious on what I'm seeing.  Have a 5 yr old was due 3/8, and a 10 yr old due as early as 3/19, for sure by 4/9.  For a couple weeks, especially 5 yr old, there's been a pink bulge protruding from vulva.  I'm not real concerned about it, but am somewhat wondering if this could lead to something like prolapse.  Both seem ok, just real heavy and this bulge.  Nothing to worry about, or keep an eye on them?

The Big Show / Asking Price of Semen
« on: February 28, 2016, 05:17:08 PM »
I'm cleaning my tanks of semen I'll never use and wondered what would be fair.  I thought whatever I can get, maybe $5/straw.  But I also have Powerstroke, Triple C Invasion, X-Ray Vision, Walks Alone and Monopoly Money that might be worth more.  I have 76 straws and thought $350 if it all went, at least the better stuff mentioned here.  That would average out to about $16/straw with the rest just thrown in, or thrown away.  Are some of the ones I listed here (Powerstroke, Invasion, X-Ray) really in demand and should sell for more?

The Big Show / Expiration Dates
« on: January 31, 2016, 11:47:33 AM »
Checking things needed when calving starts in a couple weeks.  Have Vit A-D and Vit-B-12 injectable with expired dates.  A-D expired in 2013.  B-12 was 2015.  Discard and buy new or could they still be safe and potent?

The Big Show / Sexed Heifer Semen Bulls
« on: January 26, 2016, 08:22:11 PM »
Thinking of flushing a cow before she gets too old and increase her progeny numbers.  Looking for heifers, obviously, and wondered what might be available.

Cow is a 4X4, moderate to small frame, clean neck, deep and broody. Needs little more bone, smoother shoulder and more hair would be nice.

Thought of Brilliance, used sexed last year, but ABS rep said they quit sexing his semen.  Conception rate below acceptable.  I know they have Uno Mas sexed, what's his concept. rates?  What else is available?  $50 - $75 range would be nice.  Would keep a few for replacements but if the numbers are enough, would want to market a few.

The Big Show / Who Won Reserve Shorthorn Plus
« on: January 18, 2016, 09:43:12 PM »
I need to find out if I missed something.  Was watching the Denver Open Shorthorn Plus show today.  Kane Aegeter had Grand Heifer.  After he pulled out the Res. Division to him took his spot in the line up (Ward from Ohio with blue roan).  The judge didn't take much more time and selected, I thought, the Div. Champ in front of the Ward blue roan (Mallory McCormick with a red and white).  She pulled out and walked over next to Aegeter as she should.  About that time the announcer said Res. Grand, Dawson Ward.  I checked the results page just now and that's the way it's listed also.

Are the results and announcer wrong?  Did the McCormick girl pull out by mistake?  Was this another "Steve Harvey" like mistake (Miss Universe)?  I was sure the judge walked to the McCormick heifer and then she pulled out.  He looked at Ward's blue roan but didn't walk up to her, went right to McCormick.  Anyone know who really won and what happened?

The Big Show / Connersville Indiana Beef Show
« on: October 30, 2015, 01:37:47 PM »
Anyone have any info on this show I heard is tomorrow, Oct. 31?  Time, number of animals, judge?

The Big Show / Conception Rates and Weather
« on: July 03, 2015, 08:21:07 PM »
With the up and  down temperatures and wet weather the past month, has any one else had cows not settling?  Last year was bad also with getting cows bred and a lot of other people told me they were having trouble.  So I didn't feel quite as bad knowing I wasn't alone.  This year seems to be a repeat.  Any one else having this problem?  I live in SE Indiana and June has been wet, but not as bad as other places, and the temperature is 60's and 70's a few days, then upper 80's and humid, then cool again.
