The Big Show / Dead calf
« on: September 13, 2015, 10:38:25 PM »
I have a cow that just lost her second calf in a row. The vet office thinks she injured the calves but, I don't see it. Both calves were born healthy and got up and nursed right away. Then a couple days later both calves seemed to be injured because they did want to stand up and acted like their leg was hurt. Xrays did not show any breaks and both calves died within in a day after the supposed injury. This years calf when I found him this morning he also had very bad diarrhea. Neither calf showed any signs of swelling from an injury. The cow is a very attentive mother and she is not crazy acting. She is an old show heifer and seems to be gentle with her calves. The only difference with these last 2 calves of hers from her first calf is that she has been stalled in the barn with her calves due to the flooding we are having but,the stall has plenty of room for her and a calf. Any ideas or does sound like two freak accidents in a row with the same cow? Thank you!

The Big Show / Breeding Suggestions, Please
« on: February 22, 2015, 09:19:50 AM »
We are going to AI soon and I am at a lost on what to breed this heifer too. She is purebred shorthorn sired by Proud Star. She is moderate framed, big boned, sound, big bellied but, does not have the best tail head set and she gets knocked for not being very feminine. Other then that she does show well always in the top of her class and was Res. at our county.  I want something calving ease and I was thinking maybe angus but, I do not angus genetics since we breed clubby so I have no clue who would match up well with her. Open to any suggestion as long as its calving ease and THF. Thank you!!!

The Big Show / Early Calving
« on: February 13, 2014, 10:06:45 AM »
We have a cow that is due April 17th with her 3rd calf. Her first calf came 6 weeks early and did not make it then the second time she had twins that came almost a month early. The twins despite being early and so small at birth they caught up have done really well. She is a good cow that we spent good money on so that's why I have kept her around this long. Any advise about anything we can do to help her make it full term this time? My vet did not know why she has calved early both times. So I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Hoping it was just a freak thing and never happens again but, if it does she will have to go. So far she has only been out in the pasture on grass but, I am bringing her up to the barn beginning of next month. Thank you!

The Big Show / Calf Question
« on: January 26, 2014, 08:26:16 PM »
I have a calf we recently weaned a little early due to his dam being a poor cow. The calf seems to be doing fine but, when he eats he takes a few bites of his feed then he chews on the plastic of the feeder then goes back and takes a few bites of feed and then back to chewing the plastic. This is how he eats the entire time. At first I did not think much of it but, now I am wondering if there is something wrong with him or is he just stupid. Any thoughts to why he does this strange behavior?  Thanks!

The Big Show / WARNING about posting Facebook pictures of your cattle!
« on: January 04, 2013, 07:53:01 PM »
Tonight I was just looking at several different cattle web sites and I as I was looking at this one site in Texas I see a familiar picture under calves for sale. It is my heifer!! This is a heifer born this fall at my barn and is still at my barn in Florida! I like to post pictures of our calves on Facebook because its a great way to reach potential customers but I have found out it is also a great place for people to steal your pictures for their own use. Lesson learned always watermark your photos and never trust what you see on the internet when buying calves!

The first 2 pictures are of our Carnac heifer. In the first picture she is the black calf in the middle and is only 10 days old in the picture and the other 2 calves are a month old. You can see the size difference. She is a big heifer! The 3rd picture is a Walks Alone heifer that is 7 days old in the picture.

Here's 2 calves we had a week ago they are 1 day apart in age but there's a huge size difference. LOL  Not a great picture of the calves but though the size difference was funny. The red one is a Ace of Diamonds and he is all legs. The black and white one is tiny little heifer out of an Ali son and 1st time heifer.
