The Big Show / W/C Innocent Man
« on: February 17, 2017, 12:50:15 PM »
Had a beautiful heifer calf out of a CCF vision heifer I picked up this winter yesterday. I'm pretty excited for the future of her mother, but was interested in reports on Innocent Man females. How do they mature, what are their strengths and weaknesses, are they making decent mothers?

Hang in there with me as I'm not an expert in Simmental genetics.

I had read Innocent Man had a personal 90BW but was being reported as heifer safe, I was slightly concerned but the calf was adequate size at what'd I'd guess to be 75lbs and very vigorous.

The Big Show / Herd Building Preference
« on: May 10, 2016, 08:50:18 AM »
Something I have always thought about and had a brief conversation with Gargan the other night about, but would like to hear some other thoughts. What is your preference for how to build your herd? Doesn't matter the breed or end goal, just curious to what you think is the most effective and practical.

1. One of most common, purchasing bred heifers. Good opportunity to get a young female, that won't have much lay over time before she calves and begins the process of paying for herself. Personally my biggest concern here, and maybe I am off, is that 99% of the time if the owner/seller of that heifer thought that she was going to be exceptional/outstanding they are going to probably retain her themselves. So there must be something they don't prefer about her and don't want her in the herd. Of course paying top dollar might cancel that thought out, but not everyone wants to top the sale every time they want add a female to the herd.

2. Retaining replacements from your current females. Takes a little bit of time to get them to the point of where they start paying for themselves, but should have the qualities/pedigrees your operation prefers. But hard for someone in the building stages of their herd to keep many heifers and still cash flow for the year.

3. Purchasing embryos. High risk, high reward. You will get the best genetics, but not always sure you will get a calf from it. Plus like above going to take time for them to return what you spent on them.

4. Purchasing older cows. Nobody is going to sell their best cows at 2-5 years old, but once in awhile you see the 5-10 year olds that are proven, or so they say. Do you take the chance on a 8 year old cow and hope she lasts till 12 years old and not 9? Shouldn't have glaring problems with most of these cows, as they were retained for that many years.

5. Purchasing heifer calves in the fall. Go to enough of the sales and there are some deals on maternal built females. These are the sales when people sell their best usually (to try to top the market), so the quality is there. However, once again you got the wait till they provide return. One would need a good eye, as they can change quite a bit from 8 months old to 24 months old when they are going to calve for you. But with a good eye I think this is the opportunity to get some bang for your buck, if you can out evaluate some other buyers.

Rant over, thoughts?

Anyone heard any reports on Stock Broker calves?

The Big Show / ET Herd Co-ops
« on: December 01, 2015, 06:51:06 PM »
Been doing some research on these co-op herds, but most of those topics were from 2008-2012. Markets, prices, etc change. How about some updates on what it costs you guys to put embryos in someone else's recips? Looking forward to hearing the different deals, thanks in advance.

The Big Show / Unusual weather messing with heat?
« on: May 25, 2015, 06:32:48 PM »
We've had some unusual weather the last week and a half/two weeks for Nebraska. Extreme cold for this time of the year ( high 40's/low 50's during day and 38's at night), and quite a few rainy days with it. We've had a group of 8 cows in heat detecting natural heats for 13 days and haven't had any signs of strong heat. Does the weather affect them a lot, forcing them not to show heat? I know our friends down the road are pretty frustrated they are having the same problem. Suggestions? Other then let Mother Nature warm up (it is suppose to from here on out).

The Big Show / Would you AI?
« on: May 18, 2015, 06:28:16 PM »
Had commercial cows in today to haul to grass and noticed one we'd AI'd last couple years was riding a few cows nonstop. They only jumped her a couple times. Ran her down to our AI group, but she hasn't shown much/any heat activity in this pen. Would you AI her in the AM or think it wasnt a true heat?

The Big Show / Calves got Switched Problem
« on: March 19, 2015, 03:01:48 PM »
Long story short: Had a cow calve beside one of our PB Angus first calf heifers late last night. Come to find out this morning they got their calves switched and claimed the wrong ones. Now they won't switch to the right ones at all, anyone ever had this happen? Suggestions? Already tried putting her in chute and calf claim powder.

The Big Show / THF bulls with No Heatwave
« on: January 28, 2015, 09:26:04 PM »
Got my hands on a Monopoly bred heifer tonight, already thinking ahead. She is due to I80, so hopefully that mating clicks and we can use it again. However, I am looking for other THF bulls that don't have any Monopoly/Heatwave.

Have thought of a few:
Hired Man
Dr. Who

What are some others? Thanks.

The Big Show / New Simmental Heifer, Suggestions?
« on: October 19, 2014, 01:17:09 PM »
To start off I will be the first to admit I have had very limited experience with simmental genetics. I purchased a 3/4blood bred heifer at Sloup Simmental's sale yesterday. She is a real powerful ground sow, moderate build and polled/black. Here is her pedigree: 2876071

            HTP SVF In Dew Time
Welshs Dew It Right 067T
            SVF/NJC Senerita N29

            SAFN Trust 4J

She is bred to Bismarck for her first calf. I was wondering from you simmental breeders:
What bulls cross well with the Dew It Rights? I'd prefer at %Simmy bull over a PB, but enough to keep the resulting calf at least 50%. Baldy/Blaze faces are also preferred (they just are more marketable for me). I breed for show calves, but heifers must work in the pasture after.
Also for those of you that have crossed Clubby bulls with your simmental cows, which bulls have done the best for you?

The Big Show / I80 x Heatwave Females
« on: September 28, 2014, 11:31:59 PM »
I have seen quite a few of these heifers the last couple years, really think those pedigrees two click very well. Got my hands on one last fall and bred her to Comfort Zone for the first calf. I am guessing there are others with this pedigree or similar ones, what matings have worked for you? She hasn't been tested so THF options please, don't mess around with the risk game.
