The Big Show / Re: Cleaning combs

1. let them soak in anti-fungal dip from sullivans
2. dry off

you don't need to scrub or anything if you do this. it will literally fall off.

coming form experience, don't worry, they'll probably just stop working before the box breaks.

not a fan of the pro enhancer. too gummy for me. sullivan's white touch up is better.

If they are good, we keep them. If they aren't good, we throw them in the feedlot and feed them out.

Good pedigree and a cow family might sway one towards being kept if she is borderline.

The Big Show / Re: Indoor Washrack Dimensions
« on: March 12, 2013, 01:00:49 PM »
the way I figure washing room required is by how willing you are to get wet. Big breds and steers normally fill up an 8 ft chute so I figure you want enough room not to get splashes of water and can still move around plus the 8 ft. I wouldn't want to make it any shorter than 12 ft at the smallest dimension and probably no less than 16 ft wide so that they aren't in a corner the entire time.

We flushed a couple cows to him this winter. I had not seen very many but the ones I did see I really liked and heard so many good things from other people.

I don't think they are going to have an ungodly large hip like some of the Heat Wave types but I think they will be soft, sound and maybe a tick more muscle than the monopoly's.

The Big Show / Re: Almost afraid to ask... breeding suggestions.

Now that everybody has put in their two cents, and that's all that some of it's worth, look at genetics.  Most people are just regurgitating what bull theyve heard sired a winner here or a high seller there.  Or who looked the best at Denver.  Few of these bulls are proven.  If you want to look at genetics, Naughty Pine on a Galloway or Galloway/Angus could give you another Eye Candy. Why breed to Eye Candy when you could make another one or when you've already got Galloway in the equation.  The other option again is Heat Wave.  Without Heat Wave, we'd never have any of the rest. Why use diluted genes when you can go back to the source You've obviously taken great care in your program already.  Why on earth would you base your breeding options on hype.

Your understanding of the big picture, Mr Riley is not only astute but correct!  Ladies and Gents, herein lies the thought process a man that knows what he's doing.  <beer>

I like this idea a lot, and maybe I'm just being pessimistic when I think that trying to replicate would never work for me. I've seen too many full sibs that had too much difference to think that I could try and create a competitive yet similar alternate "eye candy". It's probably just the family curse of having a bunch of "almost good cattle"...

good luck though, I'm rooting for it. after all, most of this is luck.

The Big Show / Re: Monopoly VS Walks Alone vs BIM

I"d use Monopoly first. He's got a lot of good going for him. People dog him for throwing plainer calves, but I would much rather have those softer plainer types than the coarse, tight wound ones you see out of WA.

At least the BIM calves don't seem to be as coarse as the WA calves. They both will be small, so you might as well use the one that has less problems.

Good stuff here. I would agree that much of today's modern stuff lacks originality. most artists seem to follow each other.

there are still good modern guitarists. I'm a big fan of Tom Morrello. The stuff he did with Rage Against the Machine was excellent even if it was in the 90's.

Hard to beat the greats like Jimi.

The Big Show / Re: N/C Jack Reacher movie
« on: December 23, 2012, 10:22:57 PM »
It's the hollywood version of One Shot. Liked that one but kinda still prefer Persuader as my favorite. I've read most of them as well.

I had always wondered who they would choose to play him in a movie as I was reading the books. The way always remember him being described was 6'4"  240ish and built. After I watched Thor and The Avengers, I decided that Chris Hemsworth, who played Thor, would have been a real good option to be Jack Reacher.

I'm kinda excited about seeing the movie, just don't know when I will have the chance.

Bleeding Purple

He was supposedly better than monopoly. it's a shame he died.

Direct Hit-
was a Heat Seaker son,
Another Heat Seaker son, Heat Wave, just out done him.

Total Solution-
who made who son,
has his place but not as good as his dad

Not Afraid-
One of many Heat Wave sons
trying to knock off the old man
But I think Monopoly has the corner
Covered at that market.

Direct hit's biggest fault was that he didn't throw that huge hip. good bull that sired good calves though they were really stout and big boned, they seemed to be a bit plainer hipped.
we used him and had a few nice ones that showed well, just didn't have the oomf needed.

Heard some really good things about not afraid. supposedly he powers them up more than expected but are still smoother jointed than the walks alone types.

ditto on hollywood. he was good enough to clone and there were some good ones out of him, just not used enough i don't think.

i think there were some pretty good calves out of sinclairs supernatural bull. that super 8 bull they had out of him looked like a stud.

The Big Show / Re: Sullivan Teflon combs
« on: November 27, 2012, 12:26:50 PM »
Anyone else had trouble with the coating coming off?

pretty sure they are just like a cooking pan and the teflon will scratch off. i picked up a couple in louisville and used them there. did ten head one day and didn't really have to do much more than pull some gunk off with a paper towel. glue still sticks to them but not nearly as bad and the hair comes out real easily.

definitely worth it if the coating is going to stay on. so far so good.
