Brad Hook Live Video Chat Tonight 8:00 pm central time

Thanks EVERYONE for the questions.  Always good to talk to you.....or AT you.  lol

I would, and I'm sure Jason would appreciate ANY feedback on ease of viewing, connection feed and etc., both good and bad.  I would like to do many more of these if they are viewer friendly enough.

Also thanks to Jason for allowing me to do this.

The Big Show / Re: 1/4 straw question....
« on: May 13, 2011, 08:10:42 PM »
I have bought a little semen in 1/4 straws, most of it is sexed semen.  I have gotten along just fine until today....!

I thought everything went well had the gun loaded and went to deposit the semen and the plunger was stuck!  Oops...  I worked it a little and it had grabbed the edge of the straw and had mangled it.  1 wasted straw.

Then I got another straw out and a neighboring straw stuck to the outside of the tweezers, when I tried to put it back down in, it rolled down the tank.  So I bred the cow with both straws.  Kind of an expensive day!

The second issue is 100% operator error (OE).  What about the stuck straw, I did not inspect the bottom of the straw that got mangled before I put it in.  I usually try and load it reasonable quickly. I haven't had one do that before, is there something I messed up?  I went to class a few years ago and only covered the 1/2 staws...

Could there be a problem with the gun?  Or just the operator?

Mark.....I used a bunch of sexed a couple years ago.  Bought a new gun and everything.....BUT if I remembered right, I had to double snip the end of the straw before I loaded it before it would work properly.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them or heard of it? Guy went to grab a unit of semen and the whole 1/2 rack was stuck together. Had to thraw all 5 units @ once. I would not like it and have never had anything like it happen to me in 25 years.
I did buy the combo gun but haven't tried it out yet.

Hey Brent....I don't think there's ANY WAY that could happen UNLESS that semen had been warm enough to thaw and then refreeze.  Wonder if his cow stuck?  I'm bettin' NO.

Drake, my 12 year old son got one a couple months ago.  I thought I just had to have one, but waited until he got his to mess with one a little bit before I spent the money.  I'm OUT.....I would much rather use my Mac Laptop.

It seems like the download time, especially for youtube is slower and I just never have liked the touch keyboards that much.  It's REALLY COOL, don't take me wrong, but don't buy one before you buy a home computer or laptop in my opinion.  It's more like a glorified ipod.

Yeah, no reply

I'm not sure if this is the same person that emailed me, so I'll answer on here.  We have never sexed My Turn semen.  I wouldn't mind having some, but it will be fall at least before that can be done.

I'm in southern Ohio now,  filming feeder calves for upcoming sales and haven't had much time to check the internet.  Sorry.  Brad.

The size deal was people loved them as calves but used them later as show steers and never could get them to weigh over 1250-pounds,most of the time not 1150 and these people had fed quite a few ....

Freddy.....this REALLY surprises me.  I  have told people to watch the growth on the calves, and NOT to use him on too big of a cow.  I'm not doubting or questioning you one bit, but was the ones that didn't get big enough bred similar, or random dams?

Birth weight on the My Turns is generally NO problem at all and ALL mine have been unassisted.  However, if there is some birth weight history on the dam side, I have heard of a bigger one, but definitely NOT big numbers as a norm.

The one thing that My Turn does that most don't is STAMP that LOOK in every calf.  It still amazes me at his consistency in doing that.  He's not perfect by no means, but he does have his place.

The cow pictured above is precisely the kind I like to use him on.  Smaller, soft made cows with plenty of flex and body.

sue, when i looked at the video, it didn't come in very clear, maybe it is my connection.

It's NOT your connection.  The original video footage was from an old video camera (NOT Sue's) that needed it's heads cleaned.  It's a miracle I even got it off the tape.  Too bad....the footage of the bull is actually pretty good.

Anyone know what the Lut heifer and bull brought Saturday on Steele's sale in Massena?

$12,000 to Gamble's.  That was probably cheap enough.  Thought she might bring twice that.

The Big Show / Re: Best Red Memory!

Brad, did you know she actually called the Today show producers and really talked you up?

Yes, but I had forgot about it.....I remember somebody telling me that.....typical RED!  She was something.

The first time I ever heard of "Red" or Steerplanet was when I was in New York City for the Today Show deal.  That was when the Breedersworld board was hot, and this was just kinda getting started.  Red emailed me and let me know that that wasn't the only board drumming up votes for me, and invited me to check out the PLANET.

The last and most vivid memory of her was when she dropped off a home-made cherry pie at our Ohio Beef Expo display stall, and was buzzing around like a bee the whole day with her corgi.  The day was coming to an end, I saw her walk by, and I hollered and said "Hey Red, lets get our picture taken together real quick....." , she replied, "Awww, lets just do it tomorrow, and I reluctantly agreed.

There was NO tomorrow.

The Big Show / In Memory of Jerry Ferguson-New Sharon, Iowa
« on: March 14, 2011, 08:40:18 PM »
I received the news that Jerry Ferguson had passed away last night.  I don't know the circumstances well enough to repeat anything, but it was due to a sudden illness.

If you've never heard of Jerry, he lived by Wade Rodgers and Russ Harkema there at New Sharon, and was extremely well thought of.  He owned part of "MOSSY OAK", and he and his sons raised MANY high quality cattle.

I considered him a great friend, and inspiration to all who ever come in contact with him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.  Brad.

The Big Show / Re: 4 EVERYONE That's Ever Had a Cattle Dog.
« on: February 24, 2011, 08:47:06 PM »
Thought that was pretty funny until I saw the strands of barb wire. We had a heifer do that once and she got cut up pretty bad.  Hopefully that wasn't the case here.

The wire was loose and he never got a scratch on him.  Sounded alot worse than it was.  It was extremely cold and that was the first bull of the day, I was just warming my camera up while Darla was picturing him, capturing some background footage.  Right place, right time.  I knew when that dog ran by me that things COULD get interesting.....and they DID.

It's much funnier NOW than it was THEN.  lol
