The Big Show / Re: Cedar Valley Shorthorn Sale
« on: October 23, 2012, 10:38:51 AM »
I was at the sale.   A really usefull set of cattle.   They only sold 17 heifer calves with top of 4300.00. The heifers averaged just under 2300.00 so they had a nice average.   Wasn't a bad heifer.   The breds were really good.   Could have taken all home.  They averaged around 2200.00 with the top at 4100.00.  Cow were solid and averaged just under 2000.00.   They sold 11 steers and they were good.  the price on them was disappointing as I believe they only averaged 975.00.  I believe most could have won a county fair.   Really good set of steers.
Sold some Trump semen at 550.00 per straw and DRM Phineas sold for 50.00 per straw.

Good sale, good crowd and good breeders putting it on.

The Big Show / Re: DF Waco
« on: October 23, 2012, 10:25:47 AM »
I would not say our DF Waco had too much leg under them.   Of course they are not 3 or 4 frame cattle either.   We sold a bull to Eric Ballman of Ks in the 2012 Iowa Beef Expo.   He was a 6.5 frame bull, was 13 month old and weighted 1508#, had a 3.72 WDA, had an actual Rib eye of 18.9 and his scrotal was 41.5.  That is the kind of bull that will put some weight on those calves.  With the high feed cost they have to gain and GROW.   Another thing we have found with Waco calves is the disposition is great.   My granddaughter who is 21  was helping me get calves ready for our sale.   There were 4 heifers in the pen, 3 Waco's and one from another bull.  She says to me this one isn't a Waco. I said why and she said the Waco's want to lick me the other one wants to eat me.

DF Waco is the best bull I  have every used. Can't wait until I get a roan Waco son to replace him. Only had one Waco bull calf this year and he is red and horned.   Guess will have to wait until next year to find his replacement.

She calved in January and we flushed her to Waco, got 8 embryos. Put in 3 got 2 to stick.  We are selling one of those receipts as she is carring a heifer calf.   Also we bred Puff back for a April calf and she was ultrasounded for a heifer calf by DF Waco
We have flushed her a number of time and she produces between 6 and 15 eggs,

Looking forward to the sale.   We are selling our Donor cow.  She works on every bull we used her on.   Last years top selling heifer was a DF Waco out of her.  Also had a top selling heifer a few years back out of SS Deadwood.
There will be something for everyone.   The breds from Dale will really work.  Our Donor cow came from a cow we bought from Dale. The cow goes back to Winter Puff.

When I was out to Bob's this early summer he had 2 full brothers to DF Talladega and  DF Tuscaloosa.   I thought they were tremendous then, might even be better know.
If some one is looking for a bull bred like Tuscaloosa or Talleagega give Bob a call.

The Big Show / Re: Should sale catalogs still be mailed out?

Thanks for all the input.  Everyone is like me they want the full color catalog in hand. The Internet catalog is a must, but I think the mailing list have to be reviewed each year with some names eliminated   Here is an example looking forward to next years sale.  Just had a sale and 200 people came with 50 of them buyers. Of the 50 buyers     15 bought last year, 15 bought in the last 3 years and 15 were new.   So who do we send catalogs to next year.   15 of current years buyers   15x3=45  people who bought in the last 3 years.  15 new buyers plus 150 who came to sale and didn't buy, some of them could be in the prior years buyer list.    Know that adds up to only 225 people. We print 3500 catalog.   Well know I think we concentrate on people say with in a 150 mile radius.   Also people could request a hard copy from a Web site.
How farther out do you go.  I know people say if we don't think enough of them to send them a catalog they won't come and buy.  Some won't come anyway.
At the Expo sale last year had 5 people call me who had received a catalog.   Not one of them has had Cattle in the last 4 years or more either retired or sold out.
I know it is a hard decision but I think one of the biggest expense on putting on a sale is mailing and printing more catalogs then necessary.   The big question how many are necessary.
Thanks again for the input.   I am sure we will continue to send out more then is necessary.

Thanks for the comments.  I to like the hard copy.  But for those of you that put on a production sale the cost of catalogs and postage is getting rather high.  Last year we printed and sent out about 3500 catalogs at a cost of $9075.00.  Also we have about 500-600 catalogs that didn't get to were they were sent and never came back, so who ate them!!   I know it only takes a couple of buyers who got the catalog and ended up buying to pay for the postage and catalogs.   I guess it is just part of doing business, a large part cost wise.
I was just looking for alternatives to keep the cost down.  Still appreciate any more suggestions or comments.

The Big Show / Should sale catalogs still be mailed out?
« on: May 15, 2012, 03:55:50 PM »
Just received my Shorthorn Country today.  Believe there were mailed out last of April.  It was almost 3 weeks in the mail.   So if we want Sale catalogs in the hands of buyers 2-3 weeks before the sale and it takes 1 week to print plus another week to design.  Know we are out 8 weeks.  So to get  pictures we must start 9-10 weeks before the sale. Some of my calves may not be born yet.  Calves can change alot in 2 1/2 months before the sale.

So my question is:                    Do you want a catalog mailed to you?
                                                    Is a on-line catalog adequate?
                                                     Any other suggestions
