The Big Show / Re: Any demand for Meyer 734xAng. embryos

Was this the Bando 598 donor?  I think that was the pedigree of the high seller Ryan bought on the dispersal...If so, we had a Meyer flush out of her too.  Calves were pretty good.  I only recall one hiefer and she was nice.  Had a bunch of bulls that all made decent bulls.

I'd consider that pretty nice plus!

With Meyer in there already, unless you are willing to risk extra white, I'd probably pull my mating choice of Built Right off the table.  Could be lots of chrome there.  I've seen some really nice BR's out of Meyer cows though....

I don't know this heifer's bottom side, but we've used Built Right on the Dream On free Upgrades and have had excellent success.  Had a $8000 Built Right bull out of an Upgrade heifer last year, and she has a killer baldy heifer this year by the same bull.

My only concern here would be that you could get too much white...

What is the bottom side of this heifer?

Heifer looks good to me.  Might not be the killer show heifer that you were hoping for, but looks to have the confirmation for a good, productive female.

Thing that I like best about the red bull is that he has a darn good looking mother...If you could make 100 heifers like her, he'll be a good one!

Red bull looks really good...what is he sired by?

Hmmm...this is tough limiting to 1 choice of each....

But I will go with...

Country....The Dance by Garth Brooks

Rock.......Something to Believe In by Poison

Most of the rock ballads are my favorites....

The Big Show / Re: Feeding bulls
« on: July 15, 2013, 10:55:41 AM »
I'm pretty sure that a majority of bull developers in our area (Central Nebraska) feed some type of corn by-product in the process.  We've fed wet distillers or gluten for years.  Normally, we will have only a few retest bulls out of 50 or 60 head.

The condition on a yearling bull is a tough deal.  No one wants to buy a green bull, but there are certainly more problems the more over-conditioned a bull gets.  (and they normally sell better too).  We limit our bull rations to a 52 NEG.  We've virtually had no problems with feet, legs, etc., and most of the bulls have long lives.  I know at a 52 NEG we are at the lower level of the feeding scale, but we are willing to sacrifice a little selling price with them not being as fat as some, for the longetivity of the bull and satisfied customers.

When I see some of the hot rations of a 60 NEG plus, it makes me cringe.  But everyone does things differently, and those folks might feel our ration is totally wrong.

Bottom line is too much condition will cause future problems, but too little condition will hurt the "perceived" value!

Depending on the breeds involved with the dams, I'm thinking you might have to do some genetic defect testing before they are allowed to be papered....correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm biased, but Built Right is an old standby that will work in this scenario.  He makes them efficient.

And Venom is a bull raised by Kansas State....he's a Power Stroke out of their old 11G donor.

Not sure on the model number, but we have a portable scale from this company.  They are 18 miles down the road from us and are a great company to work with.  Top notch support if you ever have an issue.

Our feedwagon scale, and both bale processor scales, are also from them.

Call them at 308-946-3591...they will answer any questions you have.

I'd classify them as a smaller company that does things the right way.

You can never check too often.  I probably get in 10 cows a year just to make sure everything is coming right, then the majority get kicked right back out....2 weeks ago had one coming tail first.  In addition, we've had 3 other breeches as well.  Being pro-active really saves lots of potential major problems.

We are always learning new lessons....
