The Big Show / Re: Shipping show steer :TX - CA. is it worth it
« on: October 16, 2012, 08:33:48 AM »
We live in South Florida and there's not much our way as far as show cattle so we have shipped lots of cattle. We have had them shipped to Florida from South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska and several other states and I have never really had any major problems. Most of the time we use Lathrop Trucking and have never had a problem with them and they are very reasonable. Here is their web site,http://www.lathroptrucking.com

Had a Ace of Diamonds out of a Sonny granddaughter and it is a very LARGE frame calf! I will try to get a picture tomorrow. Not a calf I am happy with but I am sure one day he will look fine once he stops growing and his weight can catch up to his frame size.

Our worst breeding was Walks Alone on a Who Made Who cow. The calf had so many structure issues he could hardly get around that we had to put him down at a week old. The cow is very sound and has always had a good calf until this one.  Since I had some WA left I took a chance and used him on a Jazz cow this year hopefully the first WA calf we had was just a freak thing.

I have loved our Rocky calves. We have a heifer calf this year that was out of a first time heifer. She weighed 65lbs and is very sound and has the best disposition you could ever ask for. My 5 yr old can do anything with her. The Rocky calves will have a ton of HAIR! We did have one 92lb one but he came  2 weeks late. We will continue to use him for our heifers.

The Big Show / New Calves pic (just for fun)

Here's 2 calves we had a week ago they are 1 day apart in age but there's a huge size difference. LOL  Not a great picture of the calves but though the size difference was funny. The red one is a Ace of Diamonds and he is all legs. The black and white one is tiny little heifer out of an Ali son and 1st time heifer.

The Big Show / Re: Bidder fraud at Vicklands online sale?
« on: September 18, 2011, 08:54:02 AM »
The other person's name mentioned likes to claim cattle on his web site that he never owned or sold. There is a red calf in his winners page that we bought from Kris Black then resold to a local girl who is friends with him and it is now listed under his winners page. He has never laid a hand on the calf nor was at all involved with this calf but he takes credit for it!! You can not be to carefull when buying and selling cattle or anything now a days. Way to many dishonest people out there waiting to take advantage of trusting people. I have unfortunately learned a lot of hard and $$ leasons in the cattle industry. I no longer let any calf be list as sold or leave my property without full payment. My days of trying to help people, such as waiting for fair checks, are over and I have don't just buy from anyone. Always check people out first! The sad part is most of the show calves are for kids and these people are willing to take advantage of kids.

I will say we did buy 2 steers from Todd Caldwells sale on line(cwcattlesales.com) and could not have been happier. We got both calves under our price range and it was a very smooth transaction. I am glad they caught this lying jerk because I hate to see one ruin a great way to buy cattle.

The Big Show / Re: Video Tips

I wish I could have some one I trust go look at the calves but thats hard to due when they are several states away. Its a down fall of living in South Florida, we not close to anything except the beach. I know how hard it is to photograph and video calves thats why I was trying to give some tips to help out because there's lot of us who can not go look at the calves in person. It is VERY hard to find someone that far away that is trust worthy to look for you, I have tried!! The videos help a LOT when you can not travel.

The Big Show / Video Tips
« on: September 02, 2011, 08:14:08 AM »
After watching a ton of video's while we search for a new show heifer I would like to offer some friendly tips. I know the best thing when looking to buy a new calf is to go in person but when you live to far away to go look you have to rely on videos. When making a video please make sure it is steady it is very hard to tell anything when the video gives you motion sickness. Next video the calves in short grass so we can see their feet. It drives me crazy watching a calf walk in grass that comes up past their knees. If I can not see the feet I cross the calf off my list. Next please get a rear view. I have watched so many videos of calves that look great from a profile but have no idea what they look like when the walk away. Also please don't video looking down at the calf and please use a decent video camera. Some of the videos I have watched looked like they were taken with a cheap cell phone. The quality was so poor I could not tell anything about the calf. One last thing please 15 second video do not work give me time to look at your calf. After looking a ton of great pictures I had a long list of heifers but after watching videos my list is short and its not because the calves are bad it was because I could not tell anything from the videos.   If anyone else has any tips please jump in.  I am happy to see more people using video it makes calf shopping a lot easier. Thank you and good luck to everyone with their upcoming sales!! Just remember a good video will help add $$ to your pocket.
