The Big Show / cattle on the hot seat
« Last post by oakview on April 27, 2021, 09:14:08 AM »
Epicurious magazine announced they have eliminated any beef recipes from their future publications.  They said it wasn't anything against cattle, just trying to do their part to save the planet.  According to the article I read, an arm of the UN declared that 15% of all global greenhouse gas emissions derive from livestock.  Of that, 65% is attributed to cattle.  I heard some story over the weekend that the Government's Green New Deal proposal would limit red meat consumption to 4 pounds per year, though that was walked back some yesterday.  Does the National Beef Producers organization have any contrary information they could present?  Is there anything to be done to combat this type of thing?  Are cattle really so bad that we all need to jump off a cliff?  After chasing the cattle off first, of course?  I'm not too smart, but I have a hard time believing that cattle do more harm to the environment than all the cars in Los Angeles.  True or not, the perception is out there.

The Big Show / Rule Supplements "Thicc"
« Last post by looking4champions on April 26, 2021, 08:48:33 PM »
Has anyone ever tried or does anybody use the Rule Supplements for show cattle.  It seems the guys who started the brand are heavy into sheep and dairy.

Their "Thicc" supplement sounds like it should work well.

Just looking for any user info on the Rule brand of supplements and any feedback.

Something that is interesting to me is how many of the old roan bulls show a vestigial belt pattern. Once you see it, you cant un-see it. As I understand it, from work on mice, belted, roan and lineback patterns are all determined by (dis)regulation of KIT expression during melanocyte development and follicle pigmentation that occurs in waves during embryogenesis. Leader 9th, for instance.
I had a Homedale Blizzard 820 daughter with a band like that on only one side. She went 4/5 siring calves with the band on the opposite side, and the only calf without was solid white.

For show heifer ration, this is what a local mill mixes up.  What needs to be added to it if anything?

And just an update on DMH Felix, the full Native Weston Resource Cat 20 mix. A short, wide, 2 year old that gets nothing but swamp grass and prairie hay. Very mild disposition, which may be the secret to his efficient metabolism.

Day old twin bull calves sired by YY Glasgow. The dam, Fairview Marys Dream, is by DMH Minn Max Leader ( Cruachan Max Leader on Haumont) out of the full sister of CCL6th (a Leader 6th son). The YY sire of the calves shows some real multi generational deliberate breeding. I love to see animals lined up in this way. https://shorthorn.digitalbeef.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=_animal&file=_animal&animal_registration=4285437
