I was recently notified by the people that built my web site that they are no longer going to create or update websites, I was wondering if it is practical to update my own or would I be better off to leave it to a professional ?

You could update itself. Really, the only thing that you would update often is calves for sale. I can show you what you need to change and how to change it.
