We are up to around 45 AI babies out of mature cows on the ground as of last night.

Approximate Calf Counts (in alphabetical order)
1 About Time
2 Cottonmouth
3 Dirty Harry
3 Eyes on the Money
1 George
1 Major League
9 Monopoly
1 Northern Improvement
3 Punisher
1 Ree Heights
5 Smooth Sailing
2 Sun Seeker
5 Troubador
1 Walks Alone
1 Yellowjacket

Troubador
I think I've got one bull calf and four heifer calves.  General impression is the calves are real pretty, but not real stout at birth.  We'll see how they grow out.

Troubador heifer calf out of a former show heifer.  Her calf last year was out of George and sold as a show calf.

Another Troubador heifer calf out of a Smithbilt grandaughter that has raised some real good calves for me in the past.

Cottonmouth
I bred him to two black baldy cows:  one a Buzz daughter (Full Form) and the other a Cunia grandaughter (Daddy was a Cuina x Foreplay's dam, momma was a straight Simi-Angus cow).  Only had two calves, and one of them (out of the Buzz daughter) died for some freak reason.  Momma had him fine, but found him dead - a super stout red baldy bull calf.  Late yesterday, my baldy Cunia grandaughter calves and had a black baldy heifer calf that looks as good as one can at a few hours old.  Up and chasing momma around the pasture.  Almost certainly one of the best heifer calves I've ever had unless she tanks.

I'll be breeding about 20 to him this fall.  I'd bet a lot of money he turns out to be the real deal and not just for Heferord looking calves.

Walks Alone
Only used him on one cow - a real good Meyer grandaughter that has raised show steers for me before.  Got a solid red bull calf.  He will be in contention for one of my best steers this year.  We'll see.

Monopoly
I used him heavily.  9/13 on conception so far, albeit I used him on cows that showed real good heats.  Not disappointed at all.  The white cow in my avatar has a jet black Monopoly heifer calf that will likely be real good.  No calving problems whatsoever, and unlike his daddy, his calves have plenty of get up and go at birth.  Got a real nice looking red bull calf out of him.

Eyes on the Money
I've got three calves - two heifers for sure and I haven't seen the other one personally yet.  Both heifers are as cool as all get out.  If they stay sound and get big enough, they will be nice. But they are noticably shorter made than calves from any other sire I used.  Photos of two different heifers.

Smooth Sailing
If I'm a little disappointed with any sire I used, its him.  But still too early to tell.  No calving problems at all, calves just don't really stand out yet.

A week later after first making this post - calves seem to be looking much better.

About Time
I know nobody fools with him much anymore, but he flat out works on females closely related to Cunia.  The best looking solid black heifer in the pasture is out of him.

Ree Heights
Only one calf so far, should have some more any time.  If I don't (running out of time), conception was pretty low.

Heifer Calving
Calving out heifers has gone good so far.  And believe it or not, I calved out two Heat Wave heifers completely unassisted.  And they look to be milking very well.  Almost all of our heifers were bred to our GCC Anchor 678S bull we bought from Griswold.

If you want, you can check out our heifer calving on a live camera we have set up at the following address:

We are still working out bugs, so I ask that you please don't stay in it very long.  Please do not mess with any settings, but you can move the camera around and zoom in/out.  You'll probably get asked by your computer to install an ActiveX control, which is perfectly safe.  If you are doing this from an office that has a sophisticated firewall, it may not work (I can't get into it from my office computer).  Heifers in the pen closest to the road are closest to calving, ones in the big pen to the left are a few weeks away, ones in the back small pen have calves in the last couple of days (including No. 44 who is a Heatwave), and ones out on grass calved since the first of the month.

I try not to analyze any of our Charolais calves when they are born.  If there is a breed of cattle that can change, change and then change again as they grow it is a Char!  Some of ours honestly look frail when they are new.  Possibly because these calves are going to put on muscle as they grow rather than be just Big Boned.  Which is great - big boned or not built right just means calving problems which as I get older I like less and less.

Hey Chambero, way to go with all the good information.  You should get double karma points from everyone on SP.  The Troubadors I have seen are a little frail--need more bone.  I guess you will know about dispostions pretty soon.  Looks like Monopoly and Walks Alone are working for you pretty good.  Thanks for the helpful post.

He's a Hereford cross out of Made Right.  I'm not a Hereford guy, but I saw him right after he first sold and was dropped off at REI to get collected.  I thought he was the stoutest yet soundest young bull I'd ever seen of any color.  You can find him on Collins website or Kris Blacks.  Kris raised him.  This is the first fall there will be many calves out of him.

I've heard not seen any personally, that the Cottonmouth calves have the shorter "dish" faced,. Pretty much on all of them. How concerned does everyone get about this? You can find it in the SHs and Angus also. Just wondering what PPL think.

Our Troubadour calf was frail when we was born this spring, but has came on well.  He just needs some hair, I don't know that he'll get it being out of an angus cow.

We don't ever weigh anything - these cows are out in the pasture taking care of themselves.  We check them once a day.  For comparison purposes, the Cottonmouth calves looked to me to be larger than the Monopoly calves we had, but both were certainly born unassisted.  In other words, they ain't little things - plenty of muscle and bone at birth, but nothing a mature cow shouldn't be able to handle by herself.

When you say "marked well", what do you mean? Are they Hereford marked or are they broken pattern marked coming from the NFL dam? Thanks

I didn't use him to get Hereford looking calves - I used him on two black baldy cows to get black baldy calves.  I saw the bull at REI when he was first taken there to get collected and I thought he was as good a young bull as I had ever laid eyes on - of any color.

I like the one heifer calf I've got a whole lot as of right now and plan to use Cottonmouth a lot heavier this fall.  I think he may be an outcross answer for mommas out of club calf bloodlines.

I'm near Wichita Falls, TX.
