I have been away from the show scene for 20 years but have children almost show age.  I am soliciting any advice on what Simi/Maine bulls would work well on my Angus cows.  My cows are all Duff/Ohlde/Jaur genetics that are moderate framed, deep ribbed and stout.  I am primarily looking for bulls that are good female makers.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.  Some names mentioned to me are A Step Up, Maternal Perfection, I 80, Chopper.

I would add to your list Picasso, backlash, Dr who, who made who or clone, cervasa, Patton , full flush,  and yellow jacket. Best of luck in your new endeavour. Also could look at putting embryos in your cows. Just another thought.  (thumbsup)

I really like Cerveza x Ohlde angus cows.  GCC Unwound is a PHA free bull bred exactly like Cerveza.  I'm about to breed 5 Anchor GDs to him.  I'm using him because I needed a clean version (I have a carrier bull and I dont want to worry about keeping them out of his pasture).

It's been close to 20 years ago, but the best decision we ever made was buying a nice thick white shorthorn bull to clean up behind our Maine AI'ing.  Those blue roans hung in there with the AI calves and many of the original Angus x Shorthorn F1 females stuck around and became the foundation of the set of commercial females we still have.

Thanks for the advice thus far.  GCC Unwound may work well as I have 5 Anchor daughters.  Amazing how things have changed in 20 years.  Lots of good looking bulls, but obviously very hard to tell about the consistency and soundness of their offspring without visiting with others who are much more connected than I am.  Any further advice is appreciated as I am learning as much as possible before ordering semen in the next week.  Probably will be flushing 2 of the cows to multiple bulls and see what happens.

I forgot to mention I saw some whizard fall calves last week out of occ  bred cows. They were really good. I put him on my to use list for spring. I'll post a pic of a hfr out of whizard on a occ homer cow.

If I was starting out and had angus cows and wanted to tip into the maine, simmy, or clubby business there is one bull that just stands out. MEYER 734. now unless you are loaded, you can't afford to breed your whole herd to him so I would do the second best thing. I would breed them all to the full brother to Whiplash (cant afford regular whiplash either) called WRCC Real Deal. He has some meat for a simmy and semen is very reasonable.

Thanks guys.  I will continue to research the names mentioned.  This is helping me tremendously.  It gets overwhelming looking at all the bull pics, much less trying to follow bloodlines that would work well.

3C Macho on small framed, thick, deep bodied "Ohlde type" angus cows.  Keep the F1 daughters and breed them to a Maine bull of Irish Whiskey type.  Those resulting females will make your club calf mama's.  But it takes time.

Lots of good ideas so far. But, what do you want to make? Females to raise show calves? Show steers? females to produce Simmi show heifers? The list will change depending on what you want to do.

If you want to make females to PRODUCE club calves and show steers then use Yellow Jacket on those girls. He will compliment those OCC cattle as good as any bull out there to make a clubby momma, give them some more grow and bone. Those cattle bred back to todays clubby bulls just flat works...
Another idea is to pick your top two females and IVF flush them to make Irish Whiskey female pregnancies. Yeah I know it cost more and all that, but at the end of the day if you do not want to waste time getting a bunch of bull calves IVF will push for project forward possibly 2-3 breeding seasons.
Regardless of your end destination, you have a perfect situation in my book.

Decided to use 3C Macho on most of the cows with the idea to breed back daughters to some strong maternal genetics that have Maine influence.  Will flush my top 2 cows to GCC Unwound and Meyer 734.  I really appreciate all the help.  I enjoy this board and all the info.

Thanks for the info clubby.  Appreciate the suggestion.  May use him on one of my top two in a second flush.

Don't really know where CowboyPT or Clubby24 are from, but it may make some difference where you are located in the fact that the Char "movement" is not as strong in the northern plain states yet. I think the Chars have made a very strong movement, but most clubby cows in the N plains are going to be black hide based IMO.

Color is hotter than ever no matter where you are in the clubby world at the moment. A good one is a good one.

Not if you have to take the mates to an auction. They'll dock them pretty hard, but if you can sell them all as projects that may work. Up here if you have a couple in a group that show even white socks, they'll take it out on all of your cattle.
