Here is the scenario, my daughters 3 year old shorthorn is due (actually due yesterday), she is bagged up nice and completely relaxed.  For the last day she will lay down give a couple of mild pushed and then lay upright and chew her cud or get up and move around.  How long would most of you let her go like this before checking her?  By the way she is bred straight shorthorn.

Thanks

I had an Angus cow this year do this same thing for two weeks before she calved.  Just keep an eye on her and she will be fine. The calf will come when its good and ready.

It's probably alright but if she has a malpresentation she may not show full signs of labour until it's too late. It wouldn't hurt to check if you have a chute handy. Just lost a beautiful set of twin heifers because one was presented head first and no fluids came out and she had her tail down ,but she stood a lot and was restless. I wish I had checked sooner. :(

You are certain on the AI dates and know she is due. I would definitely palpate her rectally if possible. You ahve not seen any water bag etc? After the calving season I had, I would have her checked immediately by a vet. The one thing I noticed about the last four cows that calved is they all strained and strained before they were in position to calve and showed any water bag etc. All four had problems. I guess I am a little gun shy at the moment. I lost 2 of the last four calves.

We had a cow this year that went into labor and the only reason I knew that she was really in labor is because I was there when her water broke the membrane that was visible at that time was promptly passed.  After the membrane was gone she showed absolutely no other signs of being in labor.  I let her go for about an hour and then checked her.  She wasn't rolling on the ground, she wasn't contracting, she wasn't pacing.  The calf had his head turned sideways.  I am convinced if I had not seen what I did (water breaking etc.) we would have lost that calf because she showed NO signs of labor.  Readers digest version of a big story, but you get the idea.

UPDATE:  I ended up checking her last night, and was somewhat relieved to find 2 front feet and head not very far in.  I was surprised why she was not showing strong signs of labor though.  We ended up putting her out in a small pasture to see if she would relax and start to work on things.  Within in 90 minutes she has the water sack out, and about 20 minutes later 2 feet showing.  We gaver about hour or hour and half and decided to check her again, we ended up pulling a bull calf over 100 pounds but very alert and healthy.

I'll try to get some pictures added later today.

Thanks for the comments.
