Angus bulls on heifers

Thxs for all the discussion.  I am leaning toward sexed heifer semen for most and then Northern Improvement on my Sun Seeker/WMW heifer.  A lot of the older posts i have read sound like he works pretty well on clubby females and keeps bw lows. If I do this I will have extra NI semen to use on some cows. Would he add any thickness or power to my straight angus cows or would I be better using him on some of my more powerful cows that have some simmy in them but they could use a shot of style to them.  :-\

OCC Homer..... calves come out easy and hit the ground running. the heifers make really good functional cows 

We've had 60# Bismarcks and 100#+ Bismarcks out of Angus cows. I wouldn't use him on heifers. We have had several 878 and still do.They come easy and they have been real good cows for us. We haven't been able to click with them for a show quality type calf yet but they've been great cows. I like BC Classic and SAV Final Answer.

For the ones you want to used sexed semen on Right Answer at Genex settles great and is a darn good looking bull.  A new bull I'm going to try that a buddy of mine uses on his simmy's and is really plessed is this bull.  http://www.cattlevisions.com/Angus/Vin-MarOReillyFactor.php

For me the ABS bulls would be either Brilliance or Upgrade. Final product seems to suck the guts out, but adds a ton of length.  Hoover Dam needs your attention as well. 

A very showing bull that is available through Genex is BC Lookout.  We kept a bull calf back from him and we will be selling his first set of steers commerically but you good also kept some great registered Angus steers and heifers out of him.  We are keeping our heifers back for replacement but we did not pull one calf and all hit the ground running in cold West Central Minnesota. Most of these calves were March and early April.

SAV Priority looks interesting....has anybody use him at all?

Wow, I have used Northern Improvement on my clubby heifers with great success. Been in the 60 to 70lb average BW range out of my clubby heifers. I always keep a good supply of Northern Improvement in my tank as I like using him on all my clubby heifers and have 4 clubby heifers of mine that are getting bred to him this spring.

Yeah must of been a freak deal don't hear that often.

Ive heard of several big northern improvement calves out of heifers. weve had a couple northern gun calves that were monsters too. i wouldnt feel safe breeding him to heifers. I would use jsar titan. look him up on mid continent farms website

What about his daddy- Rodman.. I might tend to like him a tad more in this scenario...  Looks more 'heifer safe' I think.

weve had both rodman and titan calves out of heifers the rodmans were abt 60-70 lbs and the titan calves havent had one over 75 pounds. i would agree that rodmans are a little easier but we have had abt 15 titan calves out of heifers this year and no problems

Are you one of the owners? ORF? Good information. Thank you.

Never had an issue with Northern Improvement. Guess depends on what kind of females you are using him on. We used him on clubby bred heifers and knock on wood we have been lucky thus far.

Got to remember there are a lot of other factors that contribute to BW. It could be the bull, but also couple be a handful of other things.

The thing about Northern Improvement is he is out of TC Stockman 365 and he has a 4.5 for birthweight epd. , which is pretty big for angus.  The cow he is out of has a smaller b.w. epd but is only a +5 for CED (sometimes I wonder how they come up with some of the #'s they do).

They come up with the #'s they do by taking results of his actual registered progeny, which also explains how they get their accuracy numbers. They do not just take the average of the two parents.

I know- it's ok.. not the first time I've heard that...  I think the extra "x" that you see- comes from the Limi in her background.. Not really a typical Angus cow from behind.  She's bred to our shorthorn/Angus yearling bull for this year-- but who knows what might get injected into her next...  Especially if I'm transferred back towards home-- and can do a little AI"ing again...
