animal science universities

I'm currently looking into going to college for animal science.  Hopefully for genetic research or something with nutrition for beef.  I have my eye on a few universities but would really like to know what other people think.  I'm considering Iowa state north Dakota state south Dakota state and university of Wyoming.  What are your thoughts? I currently live in WI so I'm going to have to pay larger tuition but that's ok.  I was offered a scholarship from Iowa States animal science department and touted there.  I guess I'm just looking for other peoples thoughts on which school could better fit my needs.  I'm hoping to one day work with genetics with different ranches and or do research for genetic companies. 

Just apply everywhere that interests you. Unless you are Harvard material, make sure you can get in everywhere you might want to go. Plus its cool to be able to show off to everyone all the fancy Yankee schools you turned down. But honestly for me Texas A&M or nothing else, of course i got my degree in Economics and not in ANSC.

My daughter is looking into pre-vet and have been told that South Dakota State has some of the best research facilities in the nation.  Our vet also told me they are starting to get very big into the embryology.  I also know that South Dakota State has a very hometown feel.  Brookings is a smaller community and everyone seems to be like neighbors.  Just my two cents.  Oh, by the way, I also was born and raised in South Dakota but am know a MN resident.

What ranch needs genetic research.

Do some job research and determine the demand.

Too many universities steal your money offering majors with no job prospects, animal science included.

See if you can get into genetics, molecular biology, cellular biology, and a few others if you want to genetics. If you still want to do genetics after that, get a Ph. D, otherwise you will be a lab tech for quite a while. Depending upon demand, getting a masters may be a good fit.

SAD, BUT TRUE!

I did look into Texas a&m but it was just so far from home. I would see my family like once a year. Also I'm aware I didn't explain exactly what I wanted to do with my degree but il not 100% sure anyway exactly what I want to do I just want a school with am exelent beef program and lots of research and internahip opertunities. 

With south Dakota what other activities are there outside of school. Such as rodeos fairs movies that stuff? 

Oklahoma State!!!

Iowa State would be a good choice. Having a USDA center right there doesn't hurt. Oklahoma State in Stillwater seemed good when I was there for judging. Nice facilities and area. If you are thinking research you could stay in state and go to Madison but they are not production oriented.

If ISU is offerening you a scholarship then go there, every little bit helps these days with tuition and housing and all other costs of college sky rocketing.  Go with the school that will pay for the most of it for you.  If you get there and don't like it when the scholarship money runs out transfer to another school.

The University of Nebraska has an excellent Animal Science program, along with outstanding facilities and research stations.

I would take a loook at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Great facilities and great program

as an alumni of WIU, and an Animal sci major--- I regret doing both, and am glad that I switched majors.

You might look at Casper College in Casper Wyoming.  They are a 2 year program.  Get an associates and then go on.  Casper has a good reputation and a small town feel. 

I have a very good friend who goes to the University of Wyoming in Animal Sci, and I think he would tell you to go elsewhere.  He has not been satisfied with his time there, but the money keeps him there.

Go where the scholarships are. Also look at cost and facilities and just what feels right to you. How often do you want to go home? The cost of travel. These are all factors as well as look at job placement rates.

I have had great luck utilizing the professors at K-State for great information and results on studies.  I am a south dakota boy,,but wish I would have went to school there

Id like to be able to go home a few times a year.  South Dakota seems popular. Anyone got anything more to expand on sdsu?

You can go home after school and during summers.

Good God knabe, who pissed in your Cheerios today? All she wanted was info on schools with good An Sci programs, not a lecture on what career path to take. She said animal science, not political science, philosophy, psychology, or art history. This site used to be a great site for exchange of information and to have questions answered. Lately it seems like it is being taken over by nay sayers and people who want to stir up trouble or debate just about anything.
