Living in California we are deficient in Selenium here. Being fairly new to the cow calf operation side of the show industry I have heard to give a BoSe shot right at birth and have also heard that it can be given the first two weeks for the same effect. Getting mixed signals you may see why I am asking.....is there a difference? What is your experience with BoSe as well as any MUST have vaccinations for newborns. So far the calves are happy and healthy and full of energy. They are in a clean space that is managed closely.
Thank you for the input

When we have  a calf that is weak or slow to get going we give them a shot of BoSe. However, we feed a selenium fortified mineral year round. This year I am considering trying MultiMin on all our calves at birth.

I dose all with BoSe within three days - couple of cc's.  I would also highly recommend within the first three days a dose of Inforce (intra nasal) 3 and a clostridial (I use Alpha 7).

We use multi min 90 at birth and again at 30 days. We've not had any problems with scours or any real sickness in 2 years with baby calves.
I've given bo-se for years to baby's but I think multi min is way better.

Thank you for all the feedback I find everyone's different vaccination/injection schedules very interesting and is giving me good resources in developing my own schedule

Mineral/vitamin requirements and supplementation is LOCAL.  Consult a local veterinarian with experience.
What works for me here in KY, or someone in OH or MN, may not be what's best for your area of the country.

Standard protocol, back when I was raising dairy calves in TN/KY, was a VitE/Se injection (I used Mu-Se, because the volume needed was a lot less, and I could treat more calves per bottle), and Vit A(ADE or ADB12) + oral rota/corona vaccine.

We used to think that maternal(colostral) antibodies interfered with immune response, but more recent investigations have proven that not to be the case.
However...if you're going to vaccinate early, it's advisable to do it on Day One...or wait 'til they're 10 days or so.  Typical calf's immune system sort of bottoms out between days 3-7; vaccinating in that timeframe won't hurt - but the calf may not respond optimally.

3 years ago we started with multimin at birth on the calves and before breeding in the spring and preg check time in the fall for the cows.  Since then we have had less problems with sick calves and better conception rates on the cows (92% on recips last 3 years on all frozen embryos).  I have become a big believer in multimin.

We've used BoSe for years being in a selenium deficient area, 1 cc/40 lb. or 2 - 3 cc/calf.  Last year we started using Multimin on cows at breeding and need to prior to calving.  This year for the calves I'm replacing BoSe with Multimin for the calves.  You give one cc. and the one cc. has about twice the selenium than the 3 cc. of BoSe plus the other benefits.  BoSe also has Vit. E, so I'm switching from Vit. AD to ADE.  Plus we give Vit. B12 and a CalviDrop bolus.
