bald spots

my steers are getting bald spots on the back of their hocks. (they are about the size of a quarter) does anyone know what could have caused this? they are bedded on straw.  ???

Based on the location, I would guess its dry skin. Your choice of bedding is probably adding to the problem. I would recommend using mane n tail (horse conditioner) on the effected areas the last thing before you put the steers in the cooler or out for the night. It will soften the skin and help the hair grow back. It works best if left on overnight or so and then just rinsed out the next day. By the way, I would check their knees too, if the hocks are dry and bald, usually the knees are too! Good Luck!

I use Calm Coat, its a new product distributed by Manna Pro. It works pretty good to soften up the dry spots, and it promotes hair growth. My steer has the same problem on his knees.

FYI, the Mane N Tail is super cheap, you can even get it at the dollar store around here. I know people who use it for their hair, so it must work! ;)
