I've done a lot of research on them including look at old posts here. But I still have some questions.

Our only internet access is a Verizon MiFi. We pay by the gigabyte so less used is definitely better!! We are looking for a camera system that can be run to the house and connected through a TV/laptop by a cord (so no internet involved). But we would also like to be able to view from cell phones, which I know will take internet. That's fine if it only uses internet IF someone logs onto check it. Are there systems like that out there? Thanks in advance!!

Sound would be a bonus and we are looking to run a 2 camera system.

there is a company called Rostech  they have a wireless system out that can shoot a signal 3500 feet from the barn to the house provided there is line of sight, with a receiver that you connect to a tv or monitor in the house, once it gets to the house you can hook it to a router somehow(im told by my technological buddy) and stream it to the net for viewing remotely. I just picked up and installed the wireless camera and receiver last weekend for $329  works great has night vision and everything, no more -30degree trips to the barn all night every two hours. :)

For these deals do you have to have the house within a certain short distance, or is there a setup that would work with a house 5 miles away?

How well do these cameras work when there's a lot of fog outside or in negative temperatures?

I believe the wireless ones are only good for a max of 1/2 mile or so.  You'd need to check it over an internet connection.

Broncofan - it's minus 30C here and it never bothers my camera set-up.  Snow and fog don't seem to bother it either.

here's what I have: http://www.allenleigh.ca/index.php?route=product/product&path=25&product_id=56

Not sure about fog, but ours works perfect in -30C.

Uniden UDS655 - 3 Cameras 7 inch Portable Video Surveillance System with 2 Outdoor Cameras. That is the system that I installed. I put a signal booster in the barn so I can pick up the wireless signal from my house. I put an old crappy computer in the barn just to run the system. That is the only thing on that computer. Plus by doing this I can pick up wifi on my phone while in the barn. I also set up a Skype account so I can log in on my phone anytime I want. You can also invite people to view cattle by allowing them access to your network......Say if you were having a sale. Call me at (920) 374-0268 and I will explain more.
