Beautiful 2 Year old from American Shorthorn Junior Show!
« on: August 05, 2011, 12:50:06 PM »
Was looking at the results and photos on the ASA site and if it was a photo contest this 2 year old and calf would have been my pick. (thumbsup) <party>
I don't see how a yearling could beat a beautiful female like this already in production.

Because most judges in the US have a bias against pairs.  It takes a really good pair and a judge that is willing to swim against the norm to use a pair to w't allin a show.  And some breeds don't allow the pairs to compete against the heifers for champion honors.

I think I am bias the other way. To me its hard to beat a cow that's already proving her worth with a heifer who looks pretty but hasn't done any work yet. She sure is nice lookin! What does the Grand Champion look like?
Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you cows... and that's pretty much the same thing.

Funny it is the opposite over here. Nine times out of ten a cow/calf will beat a heifer. Hard to argue with production rather than crystal balling. I really annoys me when a judge gives his reasons for what a great animal the heifer is what she add to the breed how good her calves will be when she may never get in calf and she has beatten and great cow/calf with proof on the ground. Sorry a pet peeve of mine.
She looks a nice balanced female.

If you guys notice, she wasn't even the champ. cow calf pair, so at least in the judges mind wasn't even the best cow calf/pair at the show.  That being said, I would like to have a herd of cows that look like this.

Here are the photos of the Champion heifers and the Champion cow. From the photos I prefer the reserve cow but some nice looking females. I would always go with a good female in production over a fancy heifer.

Here's the link to the rest of the winners photos.

Okotoks, I agree with your philosophy, and your pics of who would be tops from the pics, Would love to have you judge out here anytime!
Only thing from a pic is not being able to see through a lot of the fluff, and how they move, which is a biggie for me.  Nice pair, it also looks to me like maybe the grand cow/calf pair is not set up as well and the pic is not as good.

Okotoks, at Shorthorn junior nationals cow/calf pairs do not show against owned yearling females. cow/calf pairs, bred and owned females, shorthorn plus, and owned females are all separate. There isn't a champion overall. Although I would love to own that cow/calf pair.

Thanks for the info, I didn't realize that. We always have a run off here where each of the division 1st and 2nd go back for grand and reserve. I'm a big believer in showing pairs. It puts some emphasis on udder quality and productivity.

The only time that a cow/calf pair will show for Gr.Champ of the show against open hfrs is if she is a Snr Yrlng & has a calf at side. You will see a few of those at NAILE.
I liked the Champion pair really well.

We fell into that catagory this year at Maine Jr. Nationals, because we had a May that had a calf at side (which she should have had) she showed in her May class with her calf.

I agree. What are their purpose? To either REPRODUCE or be PROCESSED. The show ring has ended up producing "pasture ornaments" and "pets".

The girl showing the cow is Megan Miller who just had Reserve Champion Market Steer at the Ohio State Fair.
