I know this topic leaves a little to interpetation.  But I was just curious what would be everyones opinion.  My question is what five herds would you like to visit this fall?  I would like to know who has the best cows in the breed.  I have ask this question to several breeders through the years and gotten very differant answers.

i would truncate the question to which 5 herds would you like to visit this year.  this is a separate question than which is the best which in my opinion is pointless due to envinronmental, economic, and philosophy constraints.  distilling a best is a pissing contest of what you distill and distance, ie volume, kinda like what you see on tv with political discussions.  mostly pointless and at worst, entertaining, leading to apathy.

If I were goign to take time to travel and visit Shorthorn herds It would have to be herds that were similar to my own that had the same goals and ideas.... It would be a complete waste of my time to visit a herd that is bred for the show ring.....These are in no real order and of course I have been to Elbee but Lee's herd has to make the list

1 Elbee Farms

2 Haumont

3 HUBS

4 Dover Sindelar

5 Ohlde.

3. Kimmerling's

4. WHR

5. Sullivan's

Ohlde's would be on there, but I was just there.  My choices are for the same reason as SJCC..I want to visit breeder's that have the same goals as me.  I know that all the herds except Lee's are "Show Ring Cattle", but Lee just has some impressive cattle and I think that if you want to see good Shorthorns, you need to go there.

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Remember, Kevin Kimmerling really got going with ELBEE cows. And I believe he's got some really functional cattle now too.

Whenever we travel I enjoy looking at varying types of Shorthorn cattle. Even if they're not the type I would bring home. It's more the attitude of the people that make the trip worthwhile. Some I could care less if I ever visit again, and most I consider life long Friends.

Will, when you gonna come visit? I'll grill you up one of those horrible, certified Shorthorn steaks! ;D

does Ohlde still have many SH cows?

Not too many...he says it's his son's project.  The one's they had there were small framed and pretty thick. They were pretty good I thought.

ELBEE
KIMMERLING
WAKARU
JITs place in western Canada
OHLDE
(ELBEE as stated previously by others, same for K-KIM, JIT and Ohlde; Wakaru because they have an aggressive herd heath program and may be the only (correct me if I am wrong guys) Shorthorn operation that tests annually for Johne's disease - I appreciate aggressive herd health and I have like their cattle that I have seen - Ohlde just because I think it is a place everyone whould go at least once!!

I'm not being a smart alec, just an honest question. Why do you think really functional cattle can't also be the showring type cattle?  Maybe this is a question for another thread.
I'd also like to visit ELBEE, we do all of our flush work out at Cross Country, so one of these times we are in the area (when it cools down) we'll give you a call.

"may be the only (correct me if I am wrong guys) Shorthorn operation that tests annually for Johne's disease "

Is this true? I'm just small potatoes (55 shorthorn cows) and test annually for Johnes. I didn't know I was unique; I thought it was standard proceedure.

Glover's have a small herd that they purchased from Ohlde.  I think there were 23 cows in the group plus Jake's Proud Jazz.  They have other shorthorns from other places as well.  So many Shorthorn breeders raise other breeds and crosses.

For some reason I always though they were clubby breeders, knew a Glover owned Pistol Pete, and Jake's Proud Jazz, but never really knew much else about them.
