Breeding Suggestions

Looking to the best bull to breed to for the most marketable calf out of a first calf heifer.  Will calve around 23 months.  Feminine, deep bodied and smooth muscled.  Heat Wave x Meyer x Angus.  Looking at Tycoon.  Would like something around 18% or more Chi to have 12%+ Chi for new reg. regulations for heifer or bull.  <cowboy>

copied word for word.  PS... breed her to an Angus, a red angus, or a jersey..  if she's small and she's a HW.. you can expect problems calving during her first 2 for sure...

She's not small...she's a Heat Wave but she's 53% Angus and a Meyer grand-daughter.  Read " deep and smooth muscled".  She has an Angus ass...

Does Who have enuff? or Total Solution?Id sure go for a live calf first O0

I wouldn't as a heifer unless you want repro problems later on. So many want the home run out of a heifer, but most don't realize the impact of first calf dystosia or other first calf repro issues on the life time earnings of a cow.

you like hired man/  have you seen his picture on here?  breed him him to that heifer and see whlat you get...

do what you want, if you're going to anyways...

get the pullers and chains out...  or better yet, just take that heifer is and get a zipper installed now.. I'm sure you'll need it down the road.

Now, for a LIVE, marketable calf, go JPJ or his son Capiche.

Shorthorn Plus cattle are well accepted and easy to register.

Countless others have said the same thing since this site started.

At this point on this site there is so much information its more useful to search the threads before posting, then post.

Many improvements on this site have been made but prioritizing search results would be a good next priority.

Nice bull, but be aware that he comes down from Hannibal which is not a calving ease bull.

Tyson! Good calves and they come small. Had a smaller heat wave style Hollywood heifer have a pretty damn nice calf last year with no problems

I think you asking for problems. Heat Wave females are going to carry high BW. Time Saver goes back to Hannibal and Habanero, who are also known to have bigger calves. Why dont you just use a calving ease angus bull for the first calf. Sounds like you already have your mind made up, I hope you have your vet on speed dial!

Lots of high quality show type angus heifer bulls out there.  Gambles Safe Bet looks kinda cool. So does the red angus bull N Bar Hamely. Both bulls neg bw for their breed. You sound like your heart is in the right place but your in a hurry. Cattle breeding is anything but a rush. I thought I had it licked 10 years ago

I may have been away from cattle for a time but I'm no newbie.  I do appreciate the people who are making real suggestions.  Those that are being so negative and talking out their asses, I have no time for.  First, you are making generalizations just because she's a Heat Wave.  I'm aware of the possibilities, but she's also a Meyer grand-daughter.  That is why I chose her.  Secondly, you do not know this particular heifer.  Size, length between hooks and pins, width between the pins, and short vs long smooth muscle, traits one looks for in replacement heifers, not show steers.  Thirdly, I've calved out about 150 Simmental cows each year for 10 years as a young man on the farm.  We'd get up and make rounds during calving season.  We'd put up cows that were close.  We called the vet twice...C section, same cow two years in a row.  We saved every breached birth and pulled some calves too.  An 80 lb. calf was a disappointment.  120 lbs. was big.  95 - 100 was common place.  Now, the cows were bigger but a lot of it was leg, too.  I do want to breed this heifer to a safe bull.  But I also want to breed to a marketable bull.  I would like him to be at least 6+% Chi to be registered and able to be shown as such as the new rules state.  The other option would be a PB Maine so that it calf would be reg. as a Maintainer.  Please respond accordingly.  Am I clear?  <cowboy>

there is no accurate prediction of visual width between the hooks/ pins and actually pelvic measurement.. it is a PROVEN FACT, that heatwave females lack in pelvic- especially the big ended looking ones...

DO you own thing, and request to have this thread deleted. 

I used to do that myself- and someone would always so I told you so.. and most of the time it burnt me.- 2nd degree like.
