Buying older cows

I had figured you hadn't seem them. What about Texas Tornado? He's a white/smoke sire of Lautner's.

Both of these steers are out of shorthorn cows.  The red one we raised last year out of Walks Alone and the red/white one we are showing this year is out of a Heat Wave son named Wise Guy.

Love that red calf. I know we have some BIM so we may use him. Was your cow similar to the one pictured?

Its a tough call whether on not to buy her, but you can see her and we cant. If you think she can still be productive go for it. I have used Tiger Woods and Johnny Walker Red on my shorthorns with some success. Mine were TH carriers so it limited my choices. With her being TH free you have more choices and Monopoly would be on my short list to use.

The Mind that Bird looks like it works! I would stick with what works. As far as age, I took a chance on an older cow and we just sold her this past year she was 17. She was as sound as she was the day we bought her. But we had a defective calf and I am trying to keep defects out of our herd. When we expanded our herd we went to couple of good reduction dispersement sales and bought older cows purposely because our goal was to get a couple females if possible out of good genetics As far as her quarters not filling, she looks like she is a milker. I would breed her back the way its clicked. If you want a female out of her then go with something that is maternal you could keep a replacement out of her. I have bought older cows and had good luck. Our herd does not have it hard like sandhills or desert. We supplement a little bit a grain not much and have access to good hay. They have sheltered barn to calve and they don't have to wander far to get their resources. I think it has helped in the way of longevity because we pamper them. I am not trying to raise cattle on grass or make them self sufficient. Most of our girls carry flesh easy and we do not have to put a bunch into them. I have only used composites to breed terminal and not for replacements.I am not sure if that helps or not, but I wouldn't be afraid of this female. I would try to get a female out of her and then save a replacement.
