In 8 days time we have had 14 calves out of 13 cows, yes, one set of twins that the WONDERFUL cow is taking care of, of course she likes one a little better than the other but takes good care of both of them.

Of this 14 we have 11 bulls!!!!!    Steers are not our thing, we breed for heifers!  Of course my neighbor told me not to be too disgusted, they are all alive and a live bull sells better than a dead heifer.

Well, going back out to check, we have a 2nd time calver that was bred AI getting ready to drop, hopefully has in the last two hours

Congratulations! What a fun time of year :O) We are waiting patiently for a show cow to deliver her calf. She's enjoying life in the warm barn with plenty of clean straw. She might never deliver!

11 out of 14!   Not the best news at all, but your neighbor is correct.  ;)

Maybe the 2nd calver will make it 11 for 15.    ;)

Then again, maybe it will be 12 for 15.  Maybe I should start wishing for bulls.  :-\  But really I can't complain about this little dude.  He is less than 2 hours old because I checked her at 11:30 and she hadn't started anything.  He is a chunk.

I listed his pedigree below.  We thought we would take a chance and double up the Meyer 734.  Our daughter showed a heifer last year out of the same bull that had almost as much white as he does.  By my calculations he will only be a 3/8 blood which really stinks because if he would be half he would be showing in some simsolutions shows as a bull.  Below is the daughter from last year, this picture was taken right after fair last August.

Nice looking calf & heifer!

We are up to 3 sets of twins so far this year and we have really only begun on cows.

So far we've only got 7 calves on the ground, all from 1st calvers. Right now we're sitting at 5 heifers and 2 bulls. Of those, 5 are red and 2 are black. All are coming around 5 to 10 days early. Long way to go yet at this rate!

We've had 12 calves. Have pulled 2 of 11 1st calf heifers. Good weather. They got hammered in Nebraska with snowfall.

Our count is now up to 14 bulls and 4 heifers.  Our 4th heifer was born Saturday and her mother charged my husband when he found it.  I told my daughter that probably the only ones that are going to have heifers are the ones that she doesn't like because they aren't spoiled rotten and personable.  Guess she better change her mind about showing steers and pick one because the heifer prospects aren't looking too good.  And of course the next cow due has always had bulls so we are closing in on 15 and 4!

Right now we have 5 calves, 3 heifers and 2 bulls and have lost one to head back. We have about 10 head due now that are ET or AI and several heifers ready anytime. I think I may miss the Neb. Classic due to my midwife duties! Oh well, I would rather stay home and know they are being watched than leave for 2 days.

Had Number 90 this morning, hfr to bull ratio right now is a little heavy on the hfrs because we did some IVF work with sorted semen.
