hello, we have a female calf about 1 month old. the skin on her nose is cracked and looks as if it's going to peel right off ~ a while back we had a cow with the same thing and all the skin on her nose came off and was raw and we got rid of her. have any of you experienced anything like this?

I am not sure where you are from, but if you are north like we are I would guess frost bite on the calf, perhaps from when it was born.  We had a calf a few years back that nursed in a funny way for the first week or two after birth and she was born on a very cold night.  After a couple of weeks, the skin on her nose started to peel.  She had no problems after that and began to nurse normally.  We still have her and she calved out her 5th calf for us this year.  There is no sign of the frost bite on her nose.

I have no idea about the cow.

If the calf or cow were sick with a high fever, it could cause the nose skin to peel.

Ive always been told that if their nose is dry or peeling then they are sick.

A lot of times a young calf that has run a high fever will lose the skin on his nose.  Have you noticed any hair loss?
