I have a calf we recently weaned a little early due to his dam being a poor cow. The calf seems to be doing fine but, when he eats he takes a few bites of his feed then he chews on the plastic of the feeder then goes back and takes a few bites of feed and then back to chewing the plastic. This is how he eats the entire time. At first I did not think much of it but, now I am wondering if there is something wrong with him or is he just stupid. Any thoughts to why he does this strange behavior?  Thanks!

If the calf is very young it may still be needing to suck.  Are you providing a bottle as well as concentrate feed?  Might still need to feed milk replacer as well.  A pic showing condition may be helpful too.

He is 3 1/2 months old. Thought about that maybe is wanting to nurse but I doubt he will take a bottle. Right now is not to keen on us even putting a halter on him, but I can give it a try.
