Well at 15 your at least dry behind the ears, but thats about it.
I am a "wee bit older" than that, and when I was showing hard, I showed limmi's so don't preach to me about "knowing how to break not so gentle cattle."

You are a typical 15 year old... think you know how to do everything because you have done it once, or at least seen it done, and sometimes, maybe even heard about it being done.
You probably will not  learn anything from anyone because you have "been there, and done that" even though you probably did it wrong. You will learn things the hard way, and I guess that is ok.

So to the original poster asking a very good question: Listen to those that have spent a life time working with cattle, and have learned that doing things the easy way (causing fear and pain to your animal) will only backfire in the long run.
You have started the heifer right (because you mentioned she was walking fine), so keep on working with her. She will be fine with some time.
If her mood continues, and she doesn't like to walk, you might look into a physical problem, such as sore feet, or poor fitting halter.  The heifer is telling you something isn't right, now you need to find out why, not force her with pain and fear.

Good luck.

@show heifer--- no offence but a limi? wow thats rank. have you ever seen a brahman calf? honestly or even a quarter blood. once again you do not know what you are talking about. you have to make that calf know who is boss and when physical pain is needed you have to enforce it. if you want a friend. buy a dog. if you want an animal that is going to be trained to act right. then leave regardless of trust. buy a calf. i am 15 and i also have the equivilent of my age in showmanship buckles that i won with american cattle. they didnt like me all the time. but they lead. thats the entire point. no one is in the business to make a friend with a calf. . .@ go big or go home--- . now this is exactly what i am saying. thank you very much go big or go home. as i recall i heard you just did pretty good in showmanship this weekend with this same calf. thats what breed ? i guarantee that heifer trust the person leading it while its ass is getting zapped with a hot shot because the person leading the calf is LEADING it away from pain its not like you are holding the stick on the calf and fry her brain cells. just FYI hold on and make a noise that something is about to happen so one it doesn't completely freak them out but two you can use the noise in the long run. and a tractor isn't a bad idea as long as someone is walk close to the calf and you go really slow. what else are you supposed to do love on it and tell her she is pretty so she stops being so uptight and walks? ummm idk about y'all but i show every weekend i dint have time to serenade my heifer. this isn't your girlfriend this is a show animals show em who's boss because that's exactly what she is doing to you.

I would suggest you not use your hotshot method with any cattle with Flush in them, they have a way of paying you back. Like when you get them out in the open heading for the ring and they look at you and seem to say "remember that time you hit me with the hotshot, now lets see if you can keep up".

My uncle told us about a guy who used to work on a big Char ranch, this guy was about 5 foot tall with his boots on and he halter broke all the bull calves, he would break them to tie and them break them to lead. He used a tractor with a rig that attached to the 3 point hookup, it was a bar that had 6 rings on it. He would tie 6 bulls to it and lead them around a plowed field, the key was the calves had been handled prior to hooking to the tractor and the guy that was working them was the one that fed, rinsed, groomed and handled them through the entire process process. He had their trust, and he was ornery enough when needed to have he would earn their respect. Some one drove the tractor and he set right in front of the calves (yearlings) so the could see him. They did not drag them, they led them, big difference.

I can see getting tough when you have tried everything else, put if the heifer has been doing fine and is having a bad day, I do not think I would resort to drastic messsures yet. Had a steer that would lead fine, one day he acted similar to your heifer, turns out he had kidney stones or the equivalent, once we got him right, he would lead fine. Should we have hit him with a hot shot, drug him with a tractor, or doctored him. We chose the latter it worked for our situation.

It is fine to have different methods and techniques for working and breaking cattle, but if someone disagrees with the way you do it, that does not mean you need to attack them. I prefer to work with cattle that have been broke with patience and time then cattle that have been broke with force and pain. My reason, when you get into a situation that is not ideal and the cattle spook I have found that the calves that trust you will usually calm down faster, than the ones who fear you. JMO

thats right. if they fight the halter after weeks. then resort to more ugly options. like bart put it. if it gets bad then do it. if it isnt bad, you dont have to do it. and not every calf needs it because some are not as hard headed as others

In my neck of the woods, we use Limmi's. You say creek, we say crick. Same thing.
I think the person who started this post needs direction on maintaining a good relationship with their calf so they can have a fun and successful show season.

showstopper, Pretty big comments about my spelling, when your by-line is wrong.... did you mistype or just can't spell either?  (reference to your word of  LOST and not LAST when refering to cheating). Also, sense is spelled with a "s" and not a "c" as you used.  Oh well, I guess you are not pefect either, (nor am I)  Maybe YOU need to spend more time paying attention in class rather than being on steerplanet? Or are you that kid in the corner of the classroom with your hands under the desk playing with your phone?

If you are going to point out mistakes, you had better know how to spell yourself. One mistake, maybe, but two? Come on, that even made ME laugh. You also need to spend time paying attention to your teacher instead of being on SP.
gobigorgohome quote: Show heifer btw since you use to show "hard" you should know how to spell "limi" vs limmi. limmi doesnt even abreveate the word limousin. wow you say your a wee but older tha ss95 and he is 15 but you cant even spell an abreviated word.
gobigorgohome quote: lims are extrmely long, big muscled cattle they will not dissapoint any owner

show stopper 95 quote: when i quoted it it didnt come out right. now it should make more sence

Peace and out.
