Actually there is a higher percentage of club calf sired calves up here than you might believe. It was a strong show with a grey calf that comes from a top club calf breeder,Dustin Lamb.He has been breeding club calves for years and has the sale with Raymond.I am not sure the breeding but the sire is a grey that came from Daines Maines. There was even a well used up steer that came up from Bonhams this year.Good steer just been around top long. The nice thing was the steer came through the junior class that was added this year.Just like all shows there was 4 or 5 steers that could have won,I personally liked the Simmental division winner,he was third over all just like the rest of them.

I liked the champion steer - really a solid choice, that said it was perhaps one of the worst judging jobs I've seen in sometime. Not political just bad, he seemed to have no idea from one class to the next what he wanted in these steers heck in a couple classes I'm not sure he knew from one steer to the next.  This years show had to potential to have one of the strongest championship classes in the last few years but there were some darn good steers that got dumped.  This is not sour grapes either I had nothing entered, a couple I sold were there, and they got along okay.
Bawndoh, I'd be willing to say 50% or better are clubby bred.  I find it really frustrating how little knowledge my fellow Saskatchewanians have of the steer business in Western Canada.  It may not be the level of our southern neighbors dollar wise, but it is still competitive - ask those of us raising and selling them.  We are a relatively small group with an equally small market, and not a real big dollar market.  Which leads to most of us relying on name recognition and word of mouth for advertising rather than a true marketing campaign.  Those who are looking for top end steers know where to go to find them,  and it ain't at the local sale barn.  Maybe next time before you add your comments - attend some of the sales and the shows and get a handle on what is really going on.

Never knew being in a photo made you so very important.  Just seems like in the past you have been quick to play the "me and mine" game.  You sold the calf.  You didn't really win champion.  The kid who bought it did.  If I bought a calf, raised and fed it for several months, won a show, and then had someone else running around calling it their calf, I don't think I would be happy.
I said you were lying, unless you were part owner.  So...am I still calling you a fibber?

Don't know who walked away with the blue ribbon but the crowd pleaser was "Spot" owned by Tamie Eastman who is one of the vicechairpersons for the Stampede. Spot is her Texas Longhorn Riding Steer. I guess that makes Spot the unofficial "Spokes-Steer for the
world famous Calgary Stampede"!! You just never know where a Texas Longhorn will show up or what new things they'll be doing next!  To see more pix of him, click: www.premierlonghorns.com/RidingLonghorns.html

bawndoh the calf clearly came from something gonnett bought, so if he wouldnt have placed it with the right ppl whos the say it would have even made it that far. Also he did pick the calf out so yes i still think that makes it one of his calves.

Here we go again Raymond.Sounds like jealousy to me. You damn right you can call that steer your champion. It happens and is advertised that way here in the states, all the time.I'm afraid if it was me in your posistion, that knumbskull that called you a liar would eat those words.Or maybe a knuckle sandwich?Yes, that might be pushing the envelope some, but some of these characters nowadays need some old fashion religion taught to them, this old world would be much better off.

If you bred of traded a calf that went on and won I'd say you got some claim to fame. If you bred it, you chose the a good female, picked genetics that clicked, and calved out a good one and made sure it lived.

If you traded it you picked a calf that has potential to go on and get better with time and win.

So either way I'd say you deserve some congrats.

The kid who raised the calf also deserves a heck of a round applause for picking the steer out from you, feeding right, managing right, and showing the calf to the best of his abilities.

Bawndoh, calling someone a liar is one heck of an accusation especially if you dont know all the facts. You said you didnt know if he was part owner when you called him liar. Not cool.

I would love to be fed a knuckle sandwich by you...but you would be embarrassed to feed me one once you saw who you were feeding.
I'm not jealous...I'm just commenting on the things that I know, read, and heard in the past.

I know the facts...he bred the calf and sold him.  He is not the owner.  It is not his calf.  It WAS.
I agree, it is a hell of a steer.  The calf immediately stood out to me.  Im just not into people who are "me and mine" oriented.  I am not the only one on this board who has caused heck over him before.  He was rattled up before about a similar topic.

Here is the full story. The calf was raised by Dustin Lamb and is sired by Silver Heat(Heatseeker x Galloway) out of a char cow. He sold in Dustin and Raymond's sale last fall to Colby Mcleod. I find it interesting that Raymond said he placed the calf as Colby and his dad live 15 miles from Dustin and had gone through those calves a few times to sort them out and trust me they don't need help finding one. They didn't get what was considered the top pick and bought this guy as their second choice. It worked out pretty well as the top calf didn't really turn out for the guy that got him and Colby's turned out pretty darn good.

i heard this thread was useless.

perhaps some soybeans are in order.

Someone needs some phytoestrogen -- steerjockey just has a way of pi$$ing people off over the internet -- don't think he intends to, but he has that effect.  Always fun to watch the fireworks.
