First off, I'm not doing this! Just wanted to see who was thinking this morning!

If you cross a cow that is a carrier for both TH & PHA to a bull that is also a double carrier what are the % breakdown?

I drew out the square awhile back when Knabe and I were having this discussion.  I will see if I can find it in the archives..  And yes it should be a stud.  The ones that come out normal anyway..  Warrant is a double carrier and I did flush a cow to him.

I used Warhorse way back before I had heard the words PHA/TH but the cow was clean. The cow is only a THC. I know, I shouldn't say only.

1/16 will be clean
1/8 will be THC and PHAF
1/8 Will be THF and PHAC
1/4 will be double carriers
The rest are dead

but to break it down:

1/16 will be TH affected and PHAF
1/8 will be TH Affected and PHAC
1/16 will be THF and PHA Affected
1/8 will be THC and PHA Affected
1/16 will be affected by both TH and PHA....I wonder what kind of mess that looks like

you could plan on 7 out of every 16 calves to be affected.

dang I'll try this but you almost need a math major for it.If you assume tt non carrier,Tt carrier,TT deformed th calf and then you assume pp is non carrier and Pp is a carrier, and PP is deformed pha calf wouldn't yo get the following to Mendals theory.Out of 32 calves you would getTTPP,TTPp,TTPp,TTpp,    TtPP,TtPp,TtPp,Ttpp,    TtPP,TtPp,TtPp,Ttpp,    ttPP,ttPp,ttPp,ttpp, and then PPTT,PPTt,PPTt,PPtt    PpTT,PpTt,PpTt,Pptt,     PpTT,PpTt,PpTt,Pptt     ppTT,ppTt, ppTt,pptt. my head hurts

I came up with the 32 calf model (16 would have been sufficient) I got 14 dead, 2 non carriers,16 live carriers. Same %'s. The only difference was knabe did it in 10 minutes and it took me all day. ;D

Kanshow & I were talking about this earlier. Neither one of our brains must have been working.

It's so much easier if you're only dealing with a single trait.
In that case, say TH - a carrier cow bred to a carrier bull will give you 25% clean calves, 50% carriers, and 25% TH calves.
Same is true for PHA.

I know it will never happen but what if all steers were required to be say th free. It would be interesting to see how the club calf industry would adjust.

Yea, we were in over our head on figures.. I could get a single carrier factored in but double it and there was no way..    Has anyone ever put the pencil to the odds on a triple carrier.. say if you'd add in CCS?

How about two parents that were carriers of monkey mouth, pha,th,marblebone, ccs, and dwarfism? Think of the semen you could sell on a bull like that!

Knabe,

If you tackle AJ's question---take your time--we don't want you to hurt yourself.  I guess my question is "If you knew something carried all those genes---why the heck would you breed it?""
