Cattle Shows---How many people catch people cheating?

My daughter is discussing this in Ag class and wondered how many of you caught people cheating to see if it is a real problem. (argue)

black paint at a no paint show. Coloring up large areas of white. Twining when prohibited. The "standard" fudging of age.

Not sure about those shows, some places it is allowed, some places it isn't.  So many rules vary from one show to another - so often on these forums, people want to stone someone from another place for doing something that's against the rules for them, but may be perfectly acceptable where it's being done.

IMO, the most abused rules nowadays in junior livestock shows are those regarding the ownership and daily care of the animals.

  What amazes me about this topic is ever notice how hard the local county fair is policed where for most kids/families this is their one & only show that they will attend each year, but you get to a show like Louisville this year & whether or not anyone wants to admit it, the GC steer was not even close to meeting the rules of the show and they decided rather than back their own rules to let it go on through, rather than may the show look bad. I think that letting it go, makes them look worse, and they are worse. I just don't get that. Why have any rules? Just let the shows be open and cut all the red tape BS or decide that there have to be consequences for breaking rules. It's like someone said about the fudging dates, If you caught your child lying would you say it's OK, no it's not OK. We're all dealing with this type of social poisoning mentality in many areas today. JMO.Brent

I heard a song on the radio this morning "they're shutting Detroit down", it really kind of goes along these same lines, most of us were raised to believe that cheaters never prosper, but everywhere you look it seems that is who is winning whether it be the showring or AIG, kind of makes it hard to explain that to your kids when you are proved wrong everywhere they look.

I have heard of people blowing up steers. Putting air between skin and muscle to make them look fatter.

You know what we need is this:

First, divide shows into amateur (class A),  semi pro (AA) and pro divisions (AAA).   Oh yea, just like sports put almost all the money at the AAA level, and let the idiots that want to fill a calf with liquid, add fake hair, inject oil/air,  lie about age, micro-manage weights,  etc just go for it - no rules what-so-ever.  Heck, you can make a calf out of plaster of paris and cover it with hair for all I care.  

Then the rest of us that want to show actual cattle can enter the amateur ranks, work hard to compete, and not worry about most of the guys chasing the cash and fame at the AAA level.  I'd show with my kids, teach them character traits, make them work hard, and shoot, maybe even see good old fashioned effort and determination result in a victory once in a while.   I don't give a hoot about the money and fame.  

I may just start my own series - I can see it now......

This gives the appearance of more muscle not more fat fwiw.

Anyone who has shown for years has first hand witnessed all of the indiscretions that take place in and out of the ring. Where the problem lies is being able to come forth with an accusation and have it dealt with appropriately without making you the escape goat and tarnishing your reputation.

I may just start my own series - I can see it now......

just stay away from the Grey corn pro. actually a feller at brown county was just closing the door and i popped in and asked him what he was doing.... its happened a few times

****GASP**** You mean people cheat with show cattle too?  Say it isn't so!!!!

I remember when I was 11 years old, at the Elgin, OK local stock show, I had a hog get beaten by a guy who had given his hog so many shots that its neck was swollen and bleeding when he walked it into the ring.  His hog was hurt being loaded to come to the show, and he was trying to make it walk correctly.  I remember thinking that I was really getting the shaft, because I had to show in the same class with that hog.  He beat me too.  It didnt' set well with me then, and it still doesn't set well with me today.  That year, my family had gone on a ski trip to Vail, but I refused to go because I had the local show.  The ag teacher at Elgin at the time, let me stay with him & helped me get my hogs to the show and get them ready.  I was proud as I could be, and my best hog got his  butt whipped by a cheater.  

If somebody can beat me fair & square, then fine.  I can live with that anytime.  But if my kids have to stand at the back of the line because of cheaters, I'll probably get a little huffy.

This is a sore subject with me, and one of the reasons we're moving on to calves now and getting out of showing hogs.  I know people will cheat with cattle as well, but hopefully we'll have good enough animals to overcome some of it.

There was an old guy that used to come to the shows and left his wife home to do chores.
He would hang around with another lady, I don't know if he ever got caught.

I see a lot of that as well.  Dont even know if a lot of the men have wives to begin with, because you never hear about them in the first place. 
Then it seems the year after you finally discover they indeed did have ladies at home, they have a new lady on their arm at the show. 
Some days I think people are much less humane than cattle.  Some people I know of can easily be compared to cows, and bulls.  There are no boundries in some marraiges, just like a
sagging four strand barbed-wire fence.  (lol)

hey, it's not just the old guys.  this is an equal opportunity playground.  plenty of folks of all ages mixing it up. 

i used to wonder whether the people's cattle or the people had more planned matings.
