What is the general consensus regarding when you can put cows AI'd on a CIDR programme with a bull?

I have always waited two weeks after AI before putting the bull in but would like to bring it down, without the expense of DNA parentage verification.

I find it irritating keeping the few cows not ready for the TAI programme separate, with the bull, while waiting for the AI'd cows to be ready to put in with the bull as well.

I watch birthweights at calving as well, for the late AI/early natural service calves.

Opinions please!

You can turn them in with the bull a couple of days after A.I. unless you want to A.I. a second time after they cycle.

A.I. calves will be due 20 - 25 days earlier than the clean up.  IMO you can deal later with any (very few) that calve two - three weeks late (A.I.) or two - three weeks early (clean up).

If you're only AI'ing them once and then letting the bull clean-up, like savaged said, put them together 5 - 7 days after the last one was AI'ed.  If the calf comes a week after AI due date, it's probably an AI baby.  If it's born two weeks or longer after AI due date, it's probably a clean-up bull baby.  It's those ones born 10 - 12 days after AI due date that could be either.  Of course, if you know a little bit about the type of calves the clean-up bull throws, that will help decide.

Within 48-72 hours, our cows we AI are put with our clean up bulls.  Check them daily to see if any cows come into heat to avoid DNA testing calves.    Rarely will anything come into heat again until 18+ days have passed.

Watching is the best remedy.

One came into heat on Friday, which is day 18! Thanks for the advice.
