I don't want to add this to the Ft. Worth post thats already going because I feel it needs to be its own topic.  Many of you on this forum are not aware that when it comes to Classification in Ft. Worth anyone is allowed to take the steer through the line.  Kids, parents, steer jocks, breeders, you name it, its wide open. There are no rules in place to control who is on the lead rope taking a steer through classification.  I'm not usually one to stir the pot, but in my opinion, this has got to stop.

I was watching the ABC classification and saw to many broken hearted children leave the ring DQ'ed just to watch some big name breeder or steer jock right behind them classify a steer into the show.  People in the stands even yelled out in discuss when one of the highest placing steers made it through classification.  The gentleman who led it through then had the nerve to go get on the halter of another one and bring it through.

Like many other big name shows around the country, Ft. Worth is a big money show with big money cattle.  I know this and understand what my family is up against when we go to these events.  The people who work at and run the Ft. Worth stock show put on the best stock show anyone could ever hope to attend.  That being said, I feel that if they continue to let their classification run the way it is, they are going to damage the reputation of the stock show and those in charge.

The child who ownes the steer or a child from their respective club should be the only ones allowed to take animals through classification!!

Couldn't agree more! Some folks got seriously shafted, and its something that should be addressed! Inconsistency and what you just brought up are going to kill the American show up there

How many calves or entries to this show? If it is over a hundred, not too many think its broke.

The classes are half the size of the exotic and smaller than the British...I really don't see how you can say that ''not many think its broke'' if you have not been there and done that... I don't know what kind of shows you are used to going to but most weekend jackpot shows in Texas have over 100 entries... Something to do with your knowledge of the topic or a question on the topic will be much more appreciated...

Yeah if you looked at strictly numbers and didn't know what your talking about, you can say it isn't broke, if you look at %'s of classes and cattle entered, its obviously apparent that the system for abc steers is broken....

Just looking at the number of entries..around 1800.
12 classes of Euorpean Cross at 75 each = 900
That leaves 900 for the American and British to classify.
Seems like someone that is running the thing has it pretty well figured out.
My .02 cents

I dont think they are talking about how the classes break out or how many are in each show.  Heck the European crosses dont even have to go through the classification.  I agree with what is said, it hurts to watch some kid that worked his butt off get classed out and then watch a steer with even less breed characteristic walk through the classification line with some big name leadin him and get classed in without even getting a hard look.  But I dont see a solution to it.  The problem with the game of politics is no matter how difficult you try to make it for politics to play a roll, those playing the politics game will find a way to do it.
I do agree however that if the child is the only one allowed in the show ring with the calf then the child should be the only one allowed in the classifying ring with the calf.

Not arguing that the system may be flawed.
And I am aware that you dont classify a cross there.
Just saying that it happens to be pretty evenly split in numbers. Just an observation.
Sorry if I didn't make myself clear.

the americans had a class of 42, 38, and not sure what the other was but im going to say 40, that makes 120 americans... out of 1800 steers means 1 in 15 kids takes an american steer, where 1 in 2 kids takes an exotic

who's going to pay for dna to classify steers?  the entrants?

why not just have one aob class for everything?

you could divide the thing into a pool of equal # of entrants in each pool and have it set up like the ncaa brackets.

the whole thing is based on which steer is best regardless of breed or whatever?

that way you would satisfy the everyone gets a trophy mentality by handing out bracket trophies.

you could make it a draw system to put you in a bracket to eliminate the "politics".

you could set it up so no judge gets to judge the same steer twice until it became a panel when the pool was narrowed and mic the judges talking to each other

the reasons to the crowd get pretty boring at times and overemphasizes disappointment.  the thrill is in the judging and rationalizing one's decision.

this whole judging thing needs to be majorly shooken up. it's so jumped the shark.
