The bulls at the Western Illinois University Performance bull test will all have individual feed conversion data- we are one of only a few in country who do this!

Approximately 50 of these rugged, thick-made Angus, Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh, Polled Hereford, Charolais and Composite bulls with a lot of capacity and bred-in performance will be offered for sale at the 36th Annual WIU Performance Tested Bull Sale at 7 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2010 at the WIU Livestock Center on Tower Road in Macomb.  Lowderman Auction Service will auctioneer the sale.

Approx. 1/2 hr from Iowa, less than an hour from MO.

All bulls came on test Merial SureHealthTM certified and tested free of Johnes and persistently infected BVD. Extensive production information is available to help breeders improve their herds through known genetic information.  In addition to average daily gain and feed efficiency, data will also be provided on ribeye area, 12th rib fat, marbling, scrotal circumference, pelvic area, frame score and birthweight, plus EPD data from the respective breed associations.  Again this year some bulls will have DNA test data available.  All bulls offered for sale are screened for soundness and will have completed a breeding soundness exam and are ready for the upcoming breeding season.

The WIU bull testing station is open daily for those wanting to view the bulls prior to the sale.  Catalogs will go out to our regular mailing list about March 1.  For more information and a sale catalog, contact me, or PM me... I can help you out..

Or you can visit our website  http://www.wiu.edu/bulltest/

Last year, off the top of my head, all the bulls sold, and averaged around $1900.  IMO it's a great place to buy a ready to work yearling bull, for not much money...  Cross the Mississippi River, and pay 1000 per head more on same bulls!!-  We sold bulls into several states, even as far away as Kansas.

thank you for your time in reading.. hope to be in touch..

They are IF they come from carrier parents...  If it's not in a pedigree, they aren't tested...

anymore questions????

Did 7 bulls tonight...  Did a Red Angus, the Star Power (Good rip), did a new direction composite, BAF bull, and couple more, don't remember pedigrees off my head...  Some real meat wagons that are correct, stout, and powerful...

In the past few years- This is my 2nd... The composite bulls have been doing the best, not just on feed- but also in the sale.  Last year's test was won by a Sim/Angus bull who also topped our sale @ 4500- I looked some stats!!!.  We also had a world beater smoky bull who was about number 3 overall.  and sold very well to Kansas.

The SIm Angus bull has basically been kicking ass and taking names over the straight breds... I'm guess it's the hybrid vigor effect kicking in.  As far as the bulls breeding on... I really couldn't tell you- I don't personally know any of the buyers, but I have heard good reports through my superiors...

what's the ration?  does it change over time other than a conditioning ration to adjust them?

each pen has a individual chute type feeding system... They are self fed- and when the bull enters, his neck chain number is recorded, feed in trough weighed, and when leaves, same info recorded.. keeps track of intakes!  Our periodic weighings do the rest of calcualtions...

The conditioning feeding is reccomended for the consigners to do prior to arriving... once here the bulls are put on an 'about'

1/3 corn
1/3 corn gluten
1/3 soy bean hulls ration with a balancer suppliment added to go to 'i believe' 12 %... also has free choice grass hay.  They intake this ration for the duration of the test.

I also just looked up some stats, last year averaged 1900, top bull was the top indexing Sim/Angus. he sold for $4500...  The year before's top selling bull went for $5000.

Hope this helps some!!

OK, here are the pedigrees of the bulls in this year's test...  I am short 5 Angus bulls, they aren't listed on my new list, but if anyone really wants to know, I can get them for  you.  Also, I have the 84 day test spreadsheet. if anyone is interested in getting and looking at that...  PM me, but I would prefer to email it to  you at [email protected]...

First column is sire, 2nd is Mat. GS.  I forgot who the last bull was off top of my head..
