I Ai'd a replacement heifer on May 3rd, she is in standing heat today, I bred her on a natural heat, I know she has had cycled at least twice before she was bred and they were all strong standing heats. I've never had one come in this late. Is this normal? Think she is bred/open? The only one that is riding her is my lone fall cow that has been bred for a while now. I know the estrous cycle is 21-24 days but never had one go over 22 days.

maybe cyst on the ovaries? thoughts and opinions are welcome thank you

Although odd, I wouldn't worry but would breed her again this evening if she was standing this morning. Maybe the egg became degenerate after day 4-6 of being fertilized.

We have a heat detection system for our dairy cows. We are finding 25-28 heats are very common. Very few 21 or under. We have no heifers on the system but buddy of mine does and he gets them 25/26 all the time too. This year I am seeing alot of really long standing heats. One heifer was over 36 hours...breed whenever you see a heat. GnRH the "goofy" ones.

Unfortunately cattle never read the books we do, to learn the "norm". Are there any other signs of heat other then just standing? We have just started heat detecting and had one last night that was showing no signs until she came over to another cow and tried riding. I then saw a long string of beautiful clear gel on the one trying to ride. No one else even tried to ride her. If I was not right there at that time I would have missed her.  I breed her this morning. So learn all the signs and you will learn your cows and the behavior. Breed her, semen is cheap compared to open cows.

Thanks for your replies, I ended up breeding her last night. I gave her a cysterilin the first time I bred her. This time I didn't because I forgot, BUT its good to know that its common because normally I breed them and turn the bull in and don't worry about it. This year my pasture isn't quite ready for the cattle so I'm still feeding them and figured I could AI them again if they came back as I wait to go to pasture..

I have had a few this year try riding but never get road. I didnt breed those. I started heat detecting in April just AM &Pm for a half hour, over half of them came in on 1 week so I just planned to breed them natural which was the first weekof May and hit the rest a week later with cysterilin wait ten days hit them with estramate and breed when they came in.

Last year I had a breeding heifer that we were showing that I Ai'ed twice and bull bred her the third time then finally the fourth time I took some advice I read on here from "Cowboy" which was wait till she is completely done standing (laying down chewing her cud/ resting) go out and breed 6-8 hours after. So we went out at 230 am and she stuck. Timing is everything! Thanks again!

We've had all kinds of odd heats this year....back in at 16 days; back in at 25 days....had one recently bred one night; standing again 24 hours later...

Good luck...
