Wonder where you could get a hard copy in print?

It's an old Paul Harvey poem, if you google Paul Harvey or "God Made a Farmer" poem, I'm sure you would find something.  My grandfather passed away 5 years ago, and as a tribute this year for Christmas, my cousins had a 5X10 foot sign printed with a picture of my grandpa laid in behind the poem.

And on the eighth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, "I need a caretaker." So God made a farmer.

God said, "I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the field, milk cows again, eat supper, then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board." So God made a farmer.

God said, "I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn colt and watch it die, then dry his eyes and say,'Maybe next year,' I need somebody who can shape an ax handle from an ash tree, shoe a horse with hunk of car tire, who can make a harness out hay wire, feed sacks and shoe scraps. Who, during planting time and harvest season will finish his 40-hour week by Tuesday noon and then, paining from tractor back, put in another 72 hours." So God made the farmer.

God said, "I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bales, yet gentle enough to yean lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-comb pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the leg of a meadowlark."

It had to be somebody who'd plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed, and brake, and disk, and plow, and plant, and tie the fleece and strain the milk, . Somebody who'd bale a family together with the soft, strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh, and then sigh and then reply with smiling eyes when his son says that he wants to spend his life doing what Dad does. "So God made a farmer."

(clapping)  it was great seeing this ad without sexy puns, teenage superstars, futuristic BS, and bad role models (charlie sheen for example) on such a big stage.

I was proud to go check for baby calves in my dodge truck this morn.!! We forget how far removed we are from the rest of society.  Ag is one of the last american industries that still produces things and make them in the USA.

The more likes it gets, the better for the FFA. Check this out, came across my email this morning:

Dear Ag Ed and FFA Leaders,

As many of you may have seen, the National FFA Foundation and National FFA Organization cooperated with RAM Trucks on a two-minute Super Bowl commercial honoring the American Farmer that aired during the fourth quarter of the telecast.  The ad, which features a popular poem by the late broadcaster Paul Harvey, is being supported with a cover wrap of USA Today and a significant Web presence across other electronic media.

The ad serves as a call to action for the public to celebrate 2013 as the Year of the Farmer.  Individuals may do so by visiting a special Web page, viewing the positive messaging of the video and inviting others to do the same.

RAM will contribute up to $1,000,000 to the National FFA Foundation based on the views of the video and activity on the website.  The bulk of the new funding will be dedicated to supporting the FFA hunger initiative “Feeding the World–Starting at Home.”

The ad web page is not a sales site.  Individuals will only be asked to view the video and recommend it to others.  There is a link on the website for those interested in learning more about RAM products as well as a link for individuals wishing to learn more about FFA and agricultural education.

Supporting this positive messaging about the American Farmer will raise awareness of the National FFA Organization within the general public while providing significant support to a major FFA initiative.  We ask that you share news about the opportunity among members and supporters as appropriate.

Please spread the word to view the commercial on line here: Ram Trucks Super Bowl Commercial "Farmer"

Many thanks,

Dwight Armstrong                                                          Rob Cooper
Chief Executive Officer                                                  Executive Director
National FFA Organization                                            National FFA Foundation

It was Mr. Harvey's address at the 1978 National FFA Convention in KC.  Have talked about it in every class.  In today's "instant news" world, this could have one of the greatest positive impacts on agriculture that I can think of in recent memory.  Some may find that sad, and in a sense I agree, but the majority of our nation is removed from what actually happens on the farm, what it takes to put food on ALL our tables and the sacrifices that have been made for generation after generation.  For people to see this during the largest sporting event on television, during a really good game (with awesome build up) and to have people talking about it, thus, coercing more people to go find it on-line and view it even more.  How great is that?  My hats off to the FFA and Dodge for collaborating on a fine piece of viewing pleasure.

That was really awesome. Loved the commercial but especially loved Ag getting some positive press for once. I think most of our society forgets that we all in one way or another came from a rural/Ag background some are just further removed than others, and some havent been removed yet. (lol)

I have heard this on Paul Harvey's radio show a few times over the years, and I never get tired of hearing it. It sends a chill up my back every time I hear it. I think Dodge did our profession a huge favor last night and the message of the importance of the food producers in our nations was heard by a virtual captive audience watching the Super Bowl. In my opinion, this ad should get the TV commercial of the year, if there is such an award. I have never driven a Dodge... I have never even considered driving a Dodge... until a few hours ago. I applaud what they have done!

I am going to also mention the morons who have been spouting off all day about Paul Harvey being a Democrat and that he was an Animal Activist. Then there was a farmer who phoned in to a radio talk show and said that this ad offended him because he is an atheist. If I knew who he was and where he lived I would probably kick his ass at least until we were on another continent. I am sick of sll this stupidity. For goodness sake people,The MESSAGE is what is important.... NOT the MESSENGER. ( mind you I cannot think of any voice that could have done more justice to this ad and this cause). I think we all need to convey our thanks to Dodge in any way we can.

I believe the math would be: $4 million/30 seconds @ 2 minute commercial = $16 million to promote Dodge.... or more so Agriculture! Money well spent.
