oh...and we have been feeding hay since the first of oct....a month and half earlier than we normally do...

Awful dry in southern Indiana.  My dad said he can't remember it ever being this dry.  Not feedin hay to cows yet, thanks to plenty of pasture ground, but i sure wish we'd get a good soaker.  Lot of wheat, barley, and rye planted that could use a drink to get started.

I was in Northwest,KY  about a month ago and it was terrible. The pastures looked like saw dust .
I think the MTN are beautiful once you get to the top- Linnette but I was scared getting there! The roads are narrow and look like someones paved driveway.

I'm in northwest KY right now & it's still pretty terrible.  We did get some rain last week, but it's bad.  One of our main ponds is completely dry & you can barely tell that it ever held water.  Several others are extremely low.  BTW, what are pastures?  Is that like a corn stalk field?  ???  We've been feeding some hay since early August to try to keep the cattle from eating the grass down to the ground, but it didn't work to well.  If it wasn't for the corn stalks, we'd really be hurting!  The cows are sure awful proud of those stalks right now.

We are dry in SW MO. Some started feeding hay before September  :-\  We got one good rain at the end of August, so some were lucky enough to get a second cutting of hay. There was just enough rain to grow a few more inches of grass, so we have only dropped hay in one pasture (our calving pasture), but we are MIG (manage intensive grazing) and on pastures that are normally not grazed until December or January. Looks like we will be using a lot more hay than last year, since we do not have as much grass to get through the winter (we stockpile).

If you ever make it back down here, feel free to stop by!  That "barge" almost has to be the Ferry that crosses over to Cave In Rock, IL.  That ferry crossing is even closer to me than Salem.  It's located in the county right next to mine, probably about 30 minutes away.  My father in-law has has some Lowline crosses about 10-15 miles cross country from that spot.  Actually, if you had swung by here, you could have crossed the Ohio on the Shawneetown Bridge (10-15 miles away) or probably even better yet, crossed the Ohio on the HWY 41 twin bridges at Henderson/Evansville, IN (about 30 miles away).

Bring on the rain!!! Where I am in West Tennessee hasn't seen any rain to amount to anything since June.  We've been feeding hay since August.  Fortunately all our cattle have access to automatic waterers so as long as there's water in the wells...
