Very sad Always loved to see that many Shorthorn bulls in one place then to sell them all off every year was great.

It was great to see Derek's bulls in Denver, but I can only imagine what it must have cost him to display that many bulls in the yards, when you think of the trucking costs, the crew required, the hotel rooms needed, the food required, etc etc etc. Then on top of all those costs the National Western takes a commission for all animals sold in the yards. I applaud Derek for doing this for so many years as it certainly helped promote the breed as well as his own program. All Shorthorn breeders are going to have to pick up the slack now. I hear there is going to be a good number of Shorthorns in the yards this year, so that is a good thing.

I had no idea that the NWSS got a commission on top of all the other guys that he pays a commission too also. You would think that what they charge for a spot would be all they have a right to.

Doc... as far as I can remember the commission is still collected by the National Western for sales in the yards.. either in public sales or by private treaty. I know people can figure out ways around paying it especially in the case of private treaty sales, but they certainly do try to collect it if they can. You have to get a release to get out of the yards, and if anyone other than the owner is going to haul animals they want the commission paid. This was in affect when we took bulls to Denver 40 years ago and as far as I know, it is still on the books. It has been a few years since we had bulls in the yards, so it may have changed but if it has, I have not heard of it.
