Dying cattle

Just wondering what methods you all have used for dying your cattle? We've tried black velvet and box hair dye from the store. We have found that we get the best results by mixing up a couple boxes into the spray bottle and only diluting it a little bit with kleen sheen, whereas before we had filled the rest of the bottle up with kleen sheen. We also found that leaving it on for how long the box says (i.e 20-25 mins) an then rinsing it clear has worked better versus leaving it on overnight.

What methods do you guys use and what works best? Just curious  ;D

We put 4 boxes of Revolon black 10 in a fogger bottle then fill the bottle to the top with sheen, shake well, turn on blower and fog one side. Then repeat the process for the other side. We brush in with a massage brush. Put calves under fans for 30 to 45 mins depending on wow brown tinted they are. Then rinse out and blow. Has been working for us for years.

That sounds great-- might have to try that next time.

I always used the Black Velvet as I feel it holds better and longer on the calves. I also have done both ways with kleen sheen and without Kleen Sheen. I saw better results without Kleen Sheen and I put it on the calves with a spray bottle and a brush, and I keep it on for 30miuntes!

And you have never burnt the hair off your calves? Black Velvet states that you shouldnt leave in longer than 20 minutes.

I have never used black velvet, we use the Revolon Black 10 that you can by at Walmart. And no I have never burnt the hair off.

We use black velvet, and leave it on over night and do not burn, but we also dilute it down with Kleen Sheen. The only time I did burn a heifer is when we did not dilute it!

No I have never had issues with burning the hair off!

The Meyer 735 heifer calf I have posted several times has gotten some decently long and thick hair, nice length, nice bone, blah blah. The only problem is that she is really brown as can be and other people say it looks poor. I am NOT an expert groomer or really even a knowledgeable one so I was wondering what is the best product to use on her hair and what to mix it with? The Fair I am showing her at is in three weeks so when would I want to use it on her to get the best results or even how often.

Is dying cattle ethical? Is it painfull when hair burns off? Thanks in advance.

Really AJ? Is dying my grey hair unethical? I am trying to hide my age you know  ??? It never burns off when I dye it... and it is not painful.

Does anybody know what kind of dye to use on red shorthorns?

There was a grey calf that was dyed black in the 1970's that was dyed black. He won the steer show and the black started coming off and all hell broke loose. I thought some breed shows banned dying cattle. Big Mac made history. I think not musch later Joe Lewis or some one went with a cross bred in  Denver.

But on this point u are ridiculous, and why I will explain a the way maybe the best steer jock in the world explained to me!" If your daughter was in a bueaty contest would u buy her a new dress, yes u would" but the fact of the matter is you are not changing the calf in any way" and yes your daughter would get her done and your wife does too! Is it legal to completely change the color......like a yellow to a black though......not just a touch up.

After leaving the Black Velvet in the hair for 20 minutes will it just come out by washing the animal?

I use Black Velvet and dilute it down with Kleen Sheen so I only have to use one kit per animal. If they have white on them, I cover the white with Vasoline. I leave the dye in for about half an hour with the calf tied in the shade then I rinse them out and blow dry them. I get the Vasoline out the next day by washing with olive oil (for cooking, not the hair spray), Dawn dish soap, and cheap hair conditioner.

If a brindle calf is more than half black it is not illegal to turn it black! But if u dye white spots it is! They say u can't change a color pattern, but when brindle, or any way that is how it is where I come from  I come from!
