Everything old is new again!

We have been using some semen from some Shorthorn bulls from the past that we have always considered to have qualities that would work in most any era. Here are two of the bulls selling in our Sun Country Bull and Female sale on March 27th. Coyote has posted pics of some bulls he is selling this year that are sired by bulls from the past. He certainly should post them in this thread as well if he wants to do so.

1) HC Aussie Flag 303A ET x  - sire Mandalong Super Flag. Dam : Six S Leah 55L
Super Flag was imported from Australia to Canada in the early 70s and he was a breed changing sire as he helped the breed regain some acceptance again in a time when the exotics were having their hay day in the industry.  This bull is soggy, thick and soft made and is also super sound.  His dam has been an outstanding producer here. She has produced 328 grade 1 embryos and we are almost sold out. She has offspring in 8 countries now. Her natural calves have topped 3 of our sales so far.  He had a 90 lb BW unassisted. 2) HC Absolute 57A ET X
Absolute is sired by Cumberland Gay Lad and his dam is HC FL Elsie's J-Lo 3T ET x.
Gay Lad was used in the Bonnyview and South Plain herds here in Saskatchewan in the early 70s and he sired numerous test station high gainers and high sellers. His daughters were thick and good uddered. Gay Lad was born in 1966, so these genetics are from some of the foundation polled cattle in the breed. J-Lo 3T is a full sister to our Elsie's Jade donor ( who is pictured in the thread " one of our Junior herd sires". Absolute was the lightest BW bull born here in 2013 at 68 lbs. He is smaller framed but super correct and easy fleshing. I think he could be a good choice for heifers and for adding fleshing ability to most anything. 

Both Super Flag and Gay Lad were homozygous polled so there is a good chance these youngsters are as well. Both are smooth polled.

To me, I think these bulls prove that there are some very useful genetics from the past. But there are also some sires from the past that were bad then and they are bad now. I would suggest that if you want to use older genetics, study your lessons and make sure they have something to offer today.

We are keeping the Hero bull to use on heifers again.

coyote... I doubt if you can remember Bonnyview Hero 7Z seeing you are such a youngster, but I remember him well. I remember stopping in at the Bateman's Bonnyview herd, north of Regina and seeing 7Z. The Bateman's offered 7Z to my dad and I for $3000 which seemed like a lot of money that day. Dad and I debated buying him for a long time, and in hindsight we probably should have. The Bateman's were in the process of selling their herd, and we picked out 8 cows that day. They wanted $300 for our pick and if we took at least 6 head, they would sell them to us for $250 per head. Some of these cows were bred to Hero 7Z and some were bred to a monster of a bull named Blur Rock Foxie. Foxie was probably an 8+ frame, and was a dual purpose bull they had found in Ontario.
They had used 7Z in their herd and he was certainly a very good bull.... he was good then and he would be good now! He was a 3 year old when I saw him.  His sire was HD Commander's Hero, who had been Grand Champion Bull at the American Polled Congress, and he came from the Hilldale herd of Bill  Bennett in Washington. Hero was also an outstanding bull. I do wish there was semen from him today.  You are very fortunate to have found some semen from 7Z. His dam, Nupar Ridgemaid was flat good!  She came from the Nupar herd of Frank Fox which was one of the best Shorthorn herds anywhere. You will find Nupar breeding in many of the good herd bulls of this era. The Ball Dee and Four Point herds, for example, both got their footing from Nupar breeding. Frank Fox was a brother to Jonathon Fox, of Justamere Farms fame. Both of these men were master breeders.
Your Hero bull looks like he is a very good one!

Mentioning Hilldale Commander,heres a granddaughter off an irish influenced cow.

breed that cow to something combining bonanza and buster if possible!!!!!!


like that bull though.  very balancy looking with an excellent topline all the way to the poll.

We used a son of Miami Baron 20B and have retained a lovely group of rising yearling heifers.  It is always interesting what the old genetics can offer.  The video below is one of the grand daughters at one month and the picture is another at almost five months.
