With the popularity of facebook, does it make sense for a breeder to have a regular website when you can have a facebook page for free? I was thinking of making a facebook page for our cattle and then one for the show that ourselves and other locals are starting up.

We have both.  I think they each target a little different type of audience.  The FB page is almost like a blog and great for those fun little tidbits and announcements etc.  A web page is a lot more professional for marketing and getting more information and bigger photos across.

We have both and I find we get more response from our website. The facebook is nice to have but there's still some people who are not on facebook so the web site reaches more people.

Having both is better. They each have their own purpose, and connect with a little different audience.  Facebook allows you to be visible, even if you do not have a sale, or other big event to broadcast. A website allows your audience too find you through searches, and put up information for longer periods of time. I suggest www.blogger.com for a website. Very simple to set up, and even easier to update.

I guess it is better to use them both, the facebook and website. I agree to the others post that they have people who are interested but they are not on facebook. And because of the popularity of facebook many people you can attract on it.

I would set up both. The goal should be to drive extra traffic to your website through your facebook page. Even though facebook is extremely popular there are still a lot of people that aren't on it. I agree with ZNT there are a lot of neat things you can do with Blogger to give you a very functional website that you can update yourself.

I think it is good to have both a website and a FB page. I guess it depends somewhat on what you expect to do with either one. If you plan on using it for general promotion of your breeding program, you may be able to get by with only a FB page. If you are more interested in marketing, then I really think you need to get the website. Websites do not have to be expensive. There are lots and lots of people who have the abilities to set up a very good website and we see many of them on SP, that have been set up by the the person themselves.

In my case, I really had no idea how important our website would be, and it is without any doubt the most important promotion we do. We produce a pile of embryos and approximately 80-90 % of them sell to people I have never met or spoken to, and who have never seen the donors and sires. I was actually working on making shipping arrangements last night for embryos we have sold in the past few days, and we have sold 35 to the US, 16 to Scotland, 20 to England, and 18 to Canada and I have not spoken with a single one of these buyers. These sales have all been done after our online embryo sale.  It has all been  done with emails and our website. We have also sold semen to Australia in the past week and this sale was done the same way. It is really quite amazing how today's technology has made the world our marketplace. The payments for the sales to Scotland, England and Australia have all been deposited in my farm account, within 4 hours of it being wired from their banks, which I find is simply amazing!

As you can probably tell, I am a big fan of having a web site, but I also think that a FB page can also be a good way to keep in contact with prospective customers. Any positive contact you can have with people in your business is a very good thing. Marketing is as important, if not more important, than production .

Like I said before, both are needed.  I'll give one more tip.  Stay in front of the public.  Facebook allow you to do that easily, and really, steeplanet does it also.  For example:  Just in this post, through the comments I saw justintime's posted, I went to there website, looked at their bulls, and what their breeding program is about

I like the Hillside Leader X bull!

I just created a website and a facebook page, but I'm having a little trouble figuring out all of the quirks of the FB page. So I was wondering for those replying to this post if you could tell me how you sent out recommendatins. I tried sending them to my friends and when I hit the "send recommendations" button it doesn't say if they were sent or not. I asked my friends if the got the notifiction and they said they didn't. Could someone help me out here please?
