Fat Supplement
« on: May 26, 2008, 09:27:41 PM »
Ok, I have a couple of steers that are have some trouble putting on finish but if i try and up their grain too much they lay off. they are pretty steady at like 20-22 lbs of grain and its starting to get hot around here (and the weather is going crazy from one extreme to the next).  Im wondering what would be the best to put on some fat and help build muscle (and the best for the money/feeding)

AAOK recommends Natural Glo for just that thing.  I've tried the Natural Glo nuggets & it works!

Corn Oil works good too, but my experience with it is that you have to introduce it slower & you can only feed about 4 oz. per day, max, without giving them the runs.  :o

Plenty of other fat products on the market & I certainly haven't tried them all, but Natural Glo is everybit as good as AAOK says it is & I think it is easier on the cattle than the liquid oils.

If you are grinding your own feed I would try some Purina Show Chow Gran-4-T-fyer for your protein supplement.  That stuff has a lot of fat in it but also has Tasco which will help keep the animals cool.  We use it for our show heifers with nothing but ear corn.  They look fabulous and other people that bought steers from us started using it on them and you can see a huge difference in less than a month.

According to the label you can also top dress it at 20% of the total ration but if you are using a complete feed already you might have troubles with the protein and fat levels.

We use Final Cover II from Show Feeds, Inc.  Works fine for us.  Used to use Golden Flo, its just as good but harder for us to get now.

We can get the 4 t fyer here which makes it nice and idk about the golden flo nuggets but im sure i can get them in.  I was looking into the oxy but for the price i want to know it works good.  Im not grinding my own feed (i wish) but I had to switch off of the full feed i was using cause they werent eating it. so i recently went to a cob with a lot of molasses.

Natural Glo is an ADM horse feed.  Just about any "horse feed place" will have or can get it.

4TFyer has "nuggets" in it, which I assume is probably Purina's version of Natural Glo.  It also has Animax, which is Purina's attempt to compete with Calf Manna (Purina even makes a similar looking bag).  I'm sure that 4TFyer is a good product, but it also has 29% fiber in it too & that needs to be considered.  IMHO, Calf Manna >>> Animax  & Natural Glo >>> Purina's Nugget.  So, I'm not so sure that a mixture of Calf Manna + Natural Glo + Beet Pulp or Cotton Seed Hulls isn't >>> than 4TFyer.

BTW, I buy the Natural Glo from a Purina Dealer & he has also sold me Calf Manna.  ;)

I like Golden Flo and add barley to my show feed.  I used Tasco last year and will pay the extra 200 a ton again this year to put in my minerial.

4T Fyer isn't a fat supplement, it is a packaged product that allows you to mix up your own show feed.

I tried talking to some local feed stores around here to see what they had and its like talking to a brick wall (argue)!  Like one person out of the five or six stores i talked to even knew what a top dress/supplement was and nobody could wrap their head around the fact that i wanted a fat/energy supplement. The one store that carries 4tfyer is out until - they said tuesday - but that usually means like two weeks for them!  Another place told me to use milk replacer - which is just protien and wouldnt do what im looking for and doesnt help enough to justify the cost anyway.  Its been one of those days  ::).  You would think a feed rep would know what im talking about - especially after i gave examples.  Im going to have to order whatever i decide on off line

That's rough.  We had to give the new management at the feed mill we go to a little bit of an education about show cattle feeds and supplements when they first started.  I worked there for a summer and fall, and I learned a lot about pig and sheep feeds, and how to make feed in general, and they learned about show calf feeds.  Maybe take in a printed off sheet of the supplement that you want from the company's website and take it to the feed store.  Heck, around here farm stores like Big R and Farm and Fleet carry Calf Mana.

On the supplement end, Natural glo, is really nice. But I personallly, like Star glo, power up, and fresh energy. But normally when I use Fresh energy it is to keep the dust down in the feed.  Power up, is a really consistent product, and it has a funky smell that cattle and pigs really like. Calf manna to tell you the truth I never have noticed any results, Much better results from star glo.

IDK... I know people who have fed high fat milk replacers & it seemed to work very well.  Never used it, but heard that Lambs Milk Replacer works well, helps the hair & adds fat.

I use Wheat Germ Oil. It is decently priced and seems to work  real well for me. It really has no odor or taste so they don't even notice that it is in there. I top dress 2 oz per feeding.
