Heat watch/ detection systems???
« on: March 03, 2010, 06:39:10 PM »
I now the best way to detect heat is the good old fashion way.... chaulking the tailhead and sitting and watching morning and night.  Im in college now and my dad would rather put the bull out and not mess with AI'ing.  I looked up a system on cowchips.net that ran nearly $5,000, hell for that price you could pay some kid $5/hr, make his day and save a lot of money haha. Anyone know of any other products or tricks out there that are cheaper??? I just cany imagine anyone paying $5 Grand for that system, seems silly.

Check out Tattle Tale on www.valleyvet.com

Much cheaper than Heat Watch.  Doesn't do as much but does pretty good.

Maybe you could go to a timed AI system.

We CoSync and use CIDRS and heat detect instead of just timed. Then use KMARs for heat detection then we know they should all come in heat 24-48 hrs after removing the CIDRs. Usually have 90-95% of cows and heifers that come in and 90% of the ones bred settle.

Farmgirl or any one --   tell us more about this Tattle tale system.     Have you used it, how does it work,  how good did it work and cost ect.?
Valley vets site doesn't give much info on this.

There was another one, that a limo breeder that is a member on here, was talking about, is this the same one or different product?

Thanks in advance and have a good one

The Tattle Tale has 12 lights, one for each hour.  When there is a 3 second or more mount the first light is triggered.  After an hour has passed the second light comes one and blinks like the first.  So if you a device has 5 lights blinking it has been 5 hours since she first stood.  Also the sequence of the lights tells how many times the cow stood in each hour.  When 12 hours have passed then the lights change to I think it is a double blink, meaning that you need to hurry up and breed the cow.

I have nothing to gain by telling anyone about this device.  We have found them to be very helpful.

If anyone wants more info PM me and I can send you a pdf document on how they work, etc.

Thanks,
Farmgirl

There is a big angus (shepherd of the hills)farm about three miles down the road from us and they use something like this only it sends it to a computer in the barn and stores it to the cow and that is how they do there AI. but for a little shorthorn farmer like me i think i might get few and try them out. but first i am going to that angus farm and talk with them.
