Hey Everyone...... I slipped into the Stock Show right as they were selecting the Champion Crossbred Steer and Overall Grand Champion Steer.....AFTER driving on HORRIBLE roads to get there, taking about 4 times longer than normal.

I edited out this first part while down at Tony Austin's filming calves, and will do the Grand Drive once I get home tomorrow.  Hope you all enjoy....I DID!  This was actually this first time I'd EVER been there.

Good cattle, and lots of good people.  The WEATHER.......NOT SO GOOD.

I watched the Fort Worth video . I've never seen any pictures/video of any of these big shows . So I have a question . Is there a rule against these kids wearing cowboy hats when showing ? I was some what amazed that for the amount of money these kids stand to make they dress like they are going to the barn . My kids clean up better than that going to school .I would have to say the showman at our little county fair present themselves nicer . I know it's a steer show , but I guess I have a little higher standard of what a showman ought to look like.

It's improper etiquette to show with a cowboy hat in the junior show.  You just don't do it.  Those kids were dressed fine.  They are showing off the calf - not themselves.  If they look a little ruffled, its because that medium and heavy weight champion had already spent around 2 hours in the ring each.

Chambero is correct.  These kids stand about 1/2 hour in the staging area before they go in the ring, 45 minutes in the ring for their class, and if you are lucky enough to make the drive, you have another 30 minutes in the staging area and 15-30 minutes in the ring before the judge makes his selection.  All that, with a calf that stood in a grooming chute for 1-2 hours prior to even being staged.  Not easy for even a veteran showman or veteran calf.

I guess we'll agree to disagree . You go to the quarter horse world show and those halter classes are just as big and take just as long and those kids are dressed to the nines . I do agree they don't need to be blinged out , but I would expect good go to meeting clothes .

That little girl in the video did't even walk her calf from chute to the pen , I'am not buying that those kids are at the end of that lead the whole time .

We are ranchers , we are stockmen , we wear cowboy hats . Another exaple of not takeing pride in who you are .

Seriously, comparing a horse show to a cow show? And so what if she didn't walk her calf from the chute to the pen. And I think those kids are well enough dressed. Heck I know Iowa state fair, those kids where the 4H T shirts.
A cowboy hat is a style, and to a certain degree something that is done to be seen. That has nothing to do with taking pride in who you are. Maybe the horse folks do it different, but you can have that, they're a little off anyways.

You need to look at some photos of on show calf websites of winners.  NONE of the kids wear hats.  It is universal etiquette (not just Texas) that you DO NOT wear hats while showing calves.

I don't know what you think you are seeing, but I seriously doubt you send your kids to school dressed better than that group of kids - or any of the kids that show at Fort Worth.  I've spent a little time in Montana and never thought I was "outdressed".  There are a bunch of mommas that would chew you up and spit you out if you got caught saying that out loud at one of our shows.

It's a requirement that you where the Iowa State Fair T-shirt to show in the 4-H show. They are provided each year by a sponsor.

When you show dogs, you dress to the hilt like the rest.  If you show in Europe, you dress like they do.  If you show horses you dress like a cowboy/girl, but if you watch the equine contest they dress different from those who halter show.  4-H and FFA kids dress very neatly but do not wear ballcaps or hats.... equine jumpers do not wear cowboy hats either.

Please do not be critical of our kids.  I have worked shows for 50 years and they are some of the world's best!

THANKS FOR THIS SPECIAL VIDEO.  Because of the weather I chose not to go even tho my brother and I both had steers there and my grandchildren were there.

I would beg to differ , The halter people and performance folks dress simular Our 4-H kids and FFA kids dress neatly and were cowboy hats .No hunter,jumpers,dressage,3 day eventers do not were cowboy hats those are english discaplines , so not propper.

I'am not being critical of the kids , I would be more incline to be clitical of the parents . If I'am going into a bank to barrow 200,000 dollars I'am not going to were burmuda shorts and flip flops.
It's a life lesson on presenting your self .

If I were to win the lottery and could afford 10,000 dollar calves and the trip south,my kids will be the ones wearing sport coats and cowboy hats showing.Mite as well be a trend setter.

The middleweight champ in the video was absolutely phenomenal.  I loved that calf when I saw him in class, and I loved him even more when they were selecting Breed champ.  He was an AWESOME steer, but the charlais calf was just too good to get around that day.  He was too good, and Jensen liked him too much.  He put his hands on that calf every chance he got.  I bet that kid got cramps from combing that calf so much. LOL.  There were some terrific cattle in that xbreed ring.

As for what our kids wear into the ring..... my kids don't wear cowboy hats when they're at home, so why should they wear cowboy hats into the ring?  Nobody else does it & after all, I want the calf noticed, not my kid.  This isn't a costume contest.  My kids get new boots, jeans, shirts, and belts before they go to every big show.  Believe me, they look the part and look like they're ready to step straight into the Grand Champion picture with the judge.  They've never stepped foot into a showring wearing a cowboy hat, and probably never will.  Where we're from, it just isn't proper.  Would they pitch a kid out of a class for wearing a hat?  No..... but like I said, my kids don't wera them at home & aren't gonna wear a cowboy hat just so they can show a steer.

I don't think I've ever heard a judge say "Well, this is easily the best steer in the barn, but I just refuse to use him because Little Johnny didn't bring his felt cowboy hat."  That's even silly when I type it.  (lol)
