What can anyone tell me about the offspring of FSF Starburst 058?  I have only seen a couple of his calves and they were pretty good, but I haven't heard much about him lately. I see he has over 1350 calves registered by him so I would think I would be hearing more about them. I have found a few straws of semen from 058 and would like to know more about him before I do a flush to him.

(And I don't want to hear any of the political crap that has been spread on here so often... just your honest thoughts on the offspring this bull has produced)

Honest thoughts would be he is hit and miss. In my experience, there was not much consistency. Some are big gutted and gorgeous fronted while others were hard, stout, and plain. He is definitely a bull that is fit more for steer production than for heifers. I have seen some super good steers out of him. Heifers however I am less impressed with.

might be ok on those stout easy fleshing Canadian cows. But the bws can also be an issue  they are pretty moderate to begin with other than bws so I would venture a guess if you used him on an animal with a lot  of weaning wt or yearling wt you might get a pretty big calf that’s based upon US breeding however O0

I had 12 Starburst calves 4 and 5 years ago.  Small sample but here's my impressions.

On the plus side he throws a great show steer look.  Will really square up the calves and give them a big top. Can improve the muscle mass of an animal significantly in one generation.  If you're going for that look he has something to add.

If your going for functional/performance issues he falls down some.  The biggest issue I had was with retained females.  The calving ease of his daughters was a real challenge.

Similar thoughts as many above, I would use him to win a few jackpots, just not to keep daughters for production.  Love his steers, have had great success with fsf bulls to make steers, just seen too many to the females gettin a little straighter on the back end. Would do on some really sound cows but would be careful. Just my experience

There is one bred  in Bollums sale whos dam might approximate in type something like some of yours-JMO-I like the Master Prince bull (there is a bred daughter on thier sale that goes to Elsies Jade I think ) some pretty convincing winners too and Tobasco who they also use-Both have the stuff are documentted CE  and are 3 way clean-For a bull clean other than DS-Dale Allisons (Dale on here) bull Wild Side is really one of the best for what I like-EZ calving stout and as sound as you can make one-here is a video showing him at 12 and a haf years  sound and pretty powerfull and  still out with the cows which are:very pretty. functional. and maternal -and awta see them calves-Ive been there and seen him and them for what its worth Its simple (you bet) all you have to do is get the semen maybe theres some up there O0          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR-TVsOTNvM

If I remember right, there is some explanation behind the way he looks in it. But I can't remember the exact details

Wow, horrible on the move.

Not very good specimen standing still either.  No doubt he’s had some nice calves— his sheer volume of use has ensured that. But I will say I saw a pic of a pretty exceptional calf that was sired by a bull named Excalibur that is bred very similar to Starburst, just with the top and bottom side of pedigree inversed.  May be worth looking into for your purpose grant as this calf looks a lot like how you like them at birth- coming out looking a month old

xbar, I am not sure what you mean by that. I strive for unassisted births and have for many years. My 2017 calf crop was born 100% unassisted ( including all my first calf heifers) and for many years I have had very few assists.  I doubt if I have used a calf puller 5 times in the last decade over several hundred births.  I don't like real big BW calves, but I also don't like real small BW calves in the Shorthorn breed as well. As I have said on here many times before, I have never had a bull in the bottom 50% of my BWs index over 100 for growth after weaning. Some other breeds have less issues with this. This is why I think we need to talk as much about calving ease as we do about birth weights.
In the past 10 years we have sold over 300 bulls with 95% of them selling to commercial producers. Recently a rancher with 1100 cows told me the Shorthorn bulls he purchased from us, gave him far less calving problems than some of the Angus bulls he used. When I asked him if he would be needing more Shorthorn bulls next spring, he said he would be, and how many he needed would depend on how many Angus bulls he decided to get rid of. He also said that his Shorthorn sired calves also weighed 38 lbs more at weaning than his Angus sired calves.( Hybrid vigor is the only free thing left in the beef business)
Here in Canada, must mature cows probably average 1450-1500 lbs, which I realize is bigger than most in Texas and most other parts in the south. IMO, if a 1450-1500 lb cow cannot have a 95-100 lb calf, you really need to change your cows and get some that can. This is not real hard to do!
We also have sold over 1800 embryos to producers in 12 countries and I have yet to have a single complaint on birth weights of the resulting calves other than one breeder from the UK said he thought some of the calves were a bit too small at birth and that they didn't have the explosive growth he was wanting. If that is the only issue I have to deal with I will be happy! I find it interesting how producers in various countries have different thoughts on production issues.

Thanks for the video. After seeing it, I am not interested in using this bull. I am always looking for new genetics to use in my ET program, so I appreciate any information I can get on some of these sires I don't know much about.

This is a video of starburst? If so I'm glad I didn't ever get semen bought on him.

Might be the best Starburst female ever.

He's good for steers and on excellent cows he can make an okay heifer but I'd never choose him for our program. But according to some here I've never raised a good one so what do I know.

I like what he did on the one cow family here. I will post another yearling heifer pic tommorow. I run mainly am angus program with around 10 shorthorns. We bred the starburst cow to jpj and used ghost rider this year. The problem with mainstream genetics here in canada is there is not enpigh selection for guys to get there hands on.

Starburst on Proud Jazz? Ballsy. Will be interested in seeing how that turns out. Could be good but it wouldn't be my first choice.
