just got home from steer show, Grand - European, from Graham.  Reserve - Horned Hereford, girl from Wolforth (right by Lubbock).  as usual, the black was really good and when the judge picked the Champ. Hereford yesterday he did not critize the steer in any aspect.  He is an awesome Hereford.  don't know the breeding on either calf, congratulations to the families, 2 awesome calves.  the way FW loves Herefords, it wouldn't surprise me for the Reserve to bring really close to what the Grand brings.  last 2 days have been fun, fun to watch.

The Grand came out of the old Pass Cattle Co herd frm around Possum Kingdom.  Dont know for sure who gets credit for raising it, but Justin Renfro had more to do with it than anyone.  Dont know how it was bred.

The guy that gave me the info must have jumped the gun with Justin's past Pass connection.  Surprised he had it slightly wrong though.  For those that dont know them, this is good solid family - not the kind of folks that try to buy it.

The breeding on the heifers isnt remotely similar to the steers.  The guys breeding these crossbred hereford steers are just getting real good them muscle in them but retaining the correct color.

If they were honest with themselves, they'd add "good enough to win grand champion" to the list of disqualifications in the classification guide.

I have no doubt the Hereford association will promote this as some proof of progress in the breed while looking down their noses at the type of genetics that produced it.

That Hereford was out of  purebred bull called Showtime owned by Copeland and Drager in NM, so he was a little more than just Hereford marked.

Is the Hereford steer show down there sifted like the Angus steer show , had a registered Angus calf that was pretty good an the people interested in him backed of because they said he was to good an would be sifted out, an he is a registered Angus bull now that will be sold later this year ....How do the Texas rules work .....

The Polled Hereford was the best one in the lineup IMO.  You won't see a crossbred like that win again anytime soon.  Consensus was Bland's steer that was second in his class should have won hands down.
