here is a monopoly steer a family member of mine is taking to fortworth (hes actually my brothers). weighing 1145 today. he is quarter blood brangus but it does not show much. we are going to take a stab in the dark and try to get him classed american but are aware he may not work. he is not recently clipped. just got a new camera for christmas and was trying it out this evening. we are in texas so we put alot of effort in to what hair we can grow. tell it like you see it. good or bad wont hurt my feelings. steer was raised by dcc show cattle. aka kevin doonan

i like him. he has a certain flash about him thought i cant put my finger on what it is.  I would, though, like to get rid of the brown in his coat. i think if he was solid black he would be more impressive. just my opinion

He seems to slope from hooks to pins. Maybe a wee bit heavy in the shoulder and a bit high flanked?
Looks like a nice easy keeping steer, but doubt if he will go American (as you stated).

yeah he is sloping and heavy because of that half brangus mama. he is a little high flanked as you said

well we have 3 divisions. american (brahman, brangus, santa gertrudis, simbrah,. pretty much all cattle with brahman in them ). british (angus, hereford, polled, and shorty). and exotic (aob, char, limi, simi, chi, maine,). and we go in front of a classifier and we tell him what we want the calf. and then he decides with his buddies on what division he should go in based on our views and his voting. and that determines what we show the calf as. at houston and S.A they classify by the breeds. and have a whole list of breed standards and all of that. i personally dont really like the system because it gets so flawed with cattle that dont get classed right or classed out of a division that they really should be in

Nice steer.  The shape of his hip and shoulder are the things that make him look American - if he gets in he should be very competitive.

Just to clarify for those not familiar, at Fort Worth the British breeds are split up into Angus, Hereford, Polled Hereford and Shorthorn, while all the Americans show together and all the exotics show together.

He looks like he has good hair, needs dyed though, i would improve his top line a little bit though, and give him more flank, its kinda high, but has good bone and is pretty smooth throughout.

Heres what i see, so take it or leave it. As an american he could work. Ur really gonna have to drop those ears and his sheath though. his extra hair won't help things either. Remember, if u try to run american and get classed out, u cannot show at ft worth. As an exotic, i think he will be just another black steer that gets lost in the class. He definitely needs more flank, and needs to be leveler out of that hip. If i were you i would try to get ahold an additive called dark and rich, to soften and fatten him up, might help with hisflank.

Nice, big boned, thick calf. He seems a little course  but I think that can be fixed with more cover and a clip job. Just push to get him softer and go give em a run for there money, I wouldnt be too worried about gettin classed out at fw, some of those americans in there may have had an american recip but thats about it  ;) Best of luck!

I actually think you should have a pretty good shot at classing American...if you have a half-way decent classifier that is.  To many people only look for 3 things when trying to class americans...1. Lots of extra leather on the neck..2..big floppy ears...3. a big droopy navel...but there is so much more to classifying Americans...most American breeds are working extremely hard to clean up the extra leather and sheath in their breeds and most have been pretty succesful in accomplishing it...so a lot of Americans dont have that extra skin anymore...I have registered Americans in the barn that are as clean as any cow of any breed.
And while your steers ear may not droop, it looks to me like he has plenty of ear to classify...but the tell tales to me are in his build, big fronted, slightly weak topped, and high flanked, all very American characteristics.  I not only think he should class American, I think if they classed breeds in Ft Worth that he should class brangus...but thats just my opinion...and I think he will be very competitive in the Americans.
