And you wonder why shorthorn isnt taken seriously by so many, even the breeders cant agree what is a true shorthorn. The breed has some serious image issue.

I agree, though it's more of an Identity issue.  So many looking out for themselves trying to push, peddle, and market w/e they want under the Shorthorn name.

I don't agree with breeders don't know what a true shorthorn is. These cattle (mostly) have been bred to win a banner. That's been the main emphasis for a while now. It's a fact. The good shorties are few and far between. But they are there. I feel bad for those breeders. For starters they will probably never be recognized for what they've done. And secondly, the good they could bring to the table is lost because the pedigree isn't hot or the breeder isn't cool. Then throw in the breeders who have something useful but end up being another used car salesman. Using every opportunity to promote their cattle but bash the majority of the other breeders with rumors and innuendo. Every breed has it's issues with cattle and people. It's just the way of things. Shorthorns frustrate me because the main players are still satisfied winning a show with a fat heifer that more then likely won't make a cow that can compete without high input scenarios. Also it seems odd to me nobody can find the next bull or program that can help move the breed forward. What will you do. Where is the next bull coming from? Trumps, JPJ and ............what's next? I heard cattle visions star bull isn't producing semen anymore. Soooo where you going folks? Where you going? I'll tell you where you go. Commercial viability will begin when places such as Kapers, Lauers, Y Lazy Y, A@T, Muridale.

It will take breeders in numbers to use and propagate genetics like this to just prove to others what shorthorns can do. I'm no longer a ASA member and I won't be anytime soon but I'll still use shorthorns. They cut great. Are tender. And don't chase you all over the pasture. I recently promoted the eating qualities of shorthorns at a local meeting with chefs and distributors in central ohio. Nobody had heard of shorthorns but they knew the office for the CAB program was just a couple hours north of Columbus.

Y'all got one big ass hill of crap to climb to change things but it's possible. Good luck. I'll keep everyone updated on how the different bloodlines ate and what the chefs thought.

Semex sure seems to be catching on.
especially Globally. Semex has always marketed Shorthorn semen in Latin American Countries, in the Southern Hemisphere.

I have had great service from them, have had 100 doses from them in the past and should have 30 doses of Saskvalley Yesterday in the tank before the end of April!  I think he is just what I am looking for at the moment!

Thats a stout moderate bull, who in alot of respects (from the picture) is similar in type to Capiche-and I would bet that he gets used by the same people (other than maybe the Dakota Dopes) who would use Capiche-and there were alot of them. He will probably produce more performance, without giving up calving ease. So theres another step in the right direction. O0

Semex was one of unique semen companies that kept Shorthorn offering for South America...OK...not the bulls that we would need, but kept it on catalogues showing that Shorthorn are a bovine breed. Last year ABS also insert a new bull on catalogue, the first one on last 20 years I think.
Genex offered two bulls on last 8 years, nothing special.
Not many Shorthorn semen is sold here, I believe that Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay can order annually around 2500 to 3000 straws together.
Not like Capiche.
Companies must understand that with rare breeds as Shorthorn, they need HEAR what exactly the breeders wish and not contract the Champion Show or the bulls that they suspect to be the best one based on some proeminent bredders that also are the bull owner.
Yet waiting for a Shorthorn bull from north hemisphere that I can put the eyes and say...UOOOOWWWW!
Some one are catching my eye on last two years, but none on semen companies being offered for us. The unique way to get it is asking personally with owner and try arrange a good viable price to start the import procedures.
Luckly Semex own an interesting bull that we got import some semen to Brazil last month. Hope that the bull arrive soon.
