Game On, Hoo Made Hoo, Hoo Dat....

Looking to breed my good Maine cross cow Charolais, and hoping for a heifer that would be versatile enough to breed maternal or go clubby.  She is a bit heavy on her rear leg set, so I need to keep that as is, or go a bit straighter.  Her front is pretty clean, but not freaky clean.  That's it for improvements.  I wanted to go turton, but don't want to pay for it.  I'm leaning toward Game On, as he is a turton son, but Hoo Made Hoo as well as Hoo Dat intrigue me... I ask about these three because I've only seen a couple calves through a search on here and the pulse blog. Or  maybe just go Firewater?  I would go yellow jacket or something like him, but want to be able to register composite.  Any other Charolais suggestions are welcome, as I'm not well versed in the breed.  Thanks!

If you want to record the calf stay witha purebred bull.  Of the bulls you mention I like Game on and firewater the best.  If you want a red factor bull look at HRJ BULLETPROOF 411B.  Right now their are plenty of purebred bulls that show weel that also calve well.  see the latst show edition of the banner for more bull ideas: https://issuu.com/pdrneepawa/docs/feb_2016_charolais_banner_web?e=2717029/33241048

Here's hoo made Hoo after he came off cows this was taken in September when it was 90+ degrees. I thought in person as a mature bull he was the most impressive charolais bull I've ever seen and im excited to see the 3 embryo calbes I have coming next month out of him, and will keep using him. Very impressive bull

One to think about it's a wild card but im intending to use him also and he's off the radar, that's Leddy 20x. I bet if you went that way or hoo made hoo you'd like the result. I'm not a spokesman for Dan Leddy the guy does have top notch cattle though

This is a Hoo made Hoo bull calf X Naughty pine cow. Came easy, with a lot of bone. He's filling out nicely. So far very pleased with Hoo made Hoo, and plan on using him again.

Pic is at three weeks old.  Hope to get some better pics soon.

If it is bone, power, and showability you want  I would certainly look at SVY Pilgrim.  A true power bull that has plenty of maternal background and comes froma program with plenty of show ring cred: http://www.charolaisbanner.com/gerrard/Pilgrimpld6555.htm  Also note he has good EPDs.  The picture taken is him in the fall after breeding cows all summer.

Thanks mark h, definitely will consider.  Direct hit, love the calf pic.  How is your calf's hind leg set compared to his mothers?

Jerbabber, the calf has a slightly straighter leg set than that of his mother. So, I would say the bull straightened him up a bit, but that's just one calf so it's a very small sample size.

Those hind legs might get better by weaning , with these clubby cattle you never know, he might be a cripple before he is finished ...You need to get in the game and get more experienced before you make to many calls...Not trying to be a know it all, but genetics are very tricky in the X bred's and some of our Purebreds are not very reliable either ...The smoke calf to me look's pretty good , the Canadian Charolais  is Canadian an usually  to big for the clubby route ... Will have some more suitable type Charolais bulls for breeding to X bred females in our bull Sale
March 19th in Burwell ,Ne. , been raising them quite a few years and know a lot of pedigree's and that is what you need to watch and the breed is consistent be cause they are pure bred's ..

Freddy, I agree with what you say, and I was not trying to predict anything from crossbreds, just answering the question posed on the calf's leg set in relation to the cow.

DIRECT HIT I sure apologize cause I never even thought of saying anything wrong with your opinion and you never know the out come of some of these citation's ...My main subject that if you really dig the cattle business your own observation over thee years can really be help full  to your business ,and probably more consistent results than from some of the salesmen and authorities trying to sell you something ...I have been in cattle business since 10 and going on 70...Some of the different procedures like AI'ING your best instructor is the cow, watch and compare different thing's that you try that sometimes work and other times don't ..  The appearance of the fluid from the cow when heat detecting, or synchronizing is like a book telling you what is going on ...IMO

Freddy,

The only reason why I suggested Pilgrim is because the guy seemed to want from his responses a power bull with some show ring credibility. If you want a sleep easy calving ease bull that showed well then look at MVY Xplorer's 21X get at Tri-N:https://issuu.com/pdrneepawa/docs/classic_catalogue_for_web?e=2717029/11709357. with a -8 BWT EPD he is a heifer safe bull.
Also their is really no distinct Canadian and American bloodlines or herds anymore.  Breeding stock from either country is freely used with little regard to country of origin.  If you are looking for some old school high performance stuff then check out Bignells' sale (old shorthorn breeder): https://issuu.com/pdrneepawa/docs/online_2016?e=2717029/33631295  This guy knows what works on shorthorn cows (and commercial) and his bull sale average reflects that.

Mark :          Got to thinking about the Pilgrim and did really like the look's of the bull and also with these clubby bulls your not picking a sire for the whole cow herd usually ,and the clubby business there is not a more valuable tool than the semen jug with 10 units of this sire that works on certain type cows ..!!The Charolais breed and composite's are a very valuable tool to add things with more muscle and consistency ...THIS composite female out of PB  Charolais bull  And a half blood Charolais x WALK ALONE  cow ..!!  Ended up that the Charolais composite heifer was also THF and this sure didn't hurt her value being bred to JESSE JAMES...!!
